Today, we commemorate a defining moment in Syrian history: the 80th anniversary of independence from French colonial rule, known as عيد الجلاء (𝐄𝐢𝐝 𝐚𝐥-𝐉𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐚) 𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲. On 17 April 1946, the last French soldier left Syria, marking its full independence.
The path to independence was long and arduous. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Syria was placed under a French mandate by the League of Nations in 1923, pursuant to the earlier Sykes-Picot Agreement. Syrians resisted foreign rule through uprisings, political mobilization, and persistent calls for self-determination. In 1941, Syria proclaimed independence, but it was only in 1946, after years of negotiation and pressure, that foreign troops finally withdrew.
This anniversary is not merely a remembrance of the past. It is a celebration of resilience, identity, and the enduring spirit of the Syrian people. Independence laid the foundation for Syria’s pursuit of unity and progress, and for its greater role in the Arab world. It reminds us that sovereignty is both a right and a responsibility, one that is often built through generations of sacrifice.
