A HISTORIC MILESTONE: Mariveles Historical Society Founder Becomes Lifetime Member of the Philippine Historical Association
A New Chapter in Preserving the History and Heritage of Mariveles, Bataan
MARIVELES, BATAAN | November 2026
History is not merely about remembering the past. It is about discovering forgotten stories, preserving the voices of our ancestors, and ensuring that future generations understand where they came from.
For the Mariveles Historical Society (MHS), another meaningful milestone has been reached in its continuing mission to preserve and promote the rich historical heritage of Mariveles, Bataan.
On October 29, 2026, Pocholo De Leon Gonzales, founder of the Mariveles Historical Society, was officially recognized as a Lifetime Member of the Philippine Historical Association (PHA), one of the country's established professional organizations dedicated to historical scholarship, research, and the promotion of Philippine history.
The Certificate of Membership was issued at the Philippine Social Science Center in Quezon City and signed by Dr. Francis M. Navarro, President of the Philippine Historical Association, and Jonathan Balsamo, Secretary.
This recognition marks an important personal milestone for Gonzales and a significant development for the historical advocacy he began in his hometown nearly three decades ago.
From a Young Historian's Dream to a Lifelong Mission
The story of the Mariveles Historical Society began in 1998, when a young Pocholo De Leon Gonzales established an organization dedicated to researching, documenting, and preserving the history of his hometown.
At a time when many local historical narratives remained scattered among family records, oral traditions, aging photographs, and personal recollections, Gonzales recognized the importance of preserving these materials before they disappeared.
His vision was simple but ambitious: to ensure that the history of Mariveles would never be forgotten.
What began as a personal passion eventually became a lifelong commitment to local history, cultural identity, historical education, and community storytelling.
Through the years, the Mariveles Historical Society has pursued the documentation of historical landmarks, personalities, family genealogies, community traditions, and significant events that shaped Mariveles.
Among its areas of historical interest are the Spanish colonial period, the Philippine Revolution, the history of the Mariveles Lazareto, the events of World War II, and the industrial transformation of the municipality.
Bringing Forgotten Historical Figures Back Into the Narrative
One of the society's continuing research initiatives focuses on recovering the stories of individuals whose contributions to Mariveles history have received limited recognition.
Among these is Agatona De Leon, also remembered as Cabesang Tonang, a woman associated in family historical accounts with the revolutionary movement in Mariveles during the struggle against Spanish colonial rule.
Her story, including the rallying cry "Abanse, Abanse mga Kapatid!", has become an important subject of ongoing historical investigation.
For Gonzales, recovering such narratives is more than a matter of family heritage. It is part of a broader effort to examine local history through historical documents, genealogical research, oral testimony, and community memory.
The society also seeks to strengthen public understanding of the historical significance of Copo de Mariveles, the revolutionary period of 1896 to 1898, and the contributions of ordinary residents to the development of their community.
These efforts reflect a fundamental principle of local historiography: national history becomes richer and more complete when the experiences of communities are documented and critically examined.
Connecting Local History With the National Historical Community
Lifetime membership in the Philippine Historical Association provides Gonzales with an opportunity to participate more closely in a national community of historians, researchers, educators, and heritage advocates.
Founded in 1955, the Philippine Historical Association promotes historical research, professional exchange, and the advancement of historical knowledge in the Philippines.
For the Mariveles Historical Society, this connection represents an opportunity to strengthen its research practices, establish scholarly collaborations, and bring the historical narratives of Mariveles to wider audiences.
It also reinforces the importance of responsible historical scholarship, particularly the careful distinction between documented facts, oral traditions, family accounts, and historical interpretations.
While the certificate recognizes Gonzales personally as a lifetime member, the achievement also carries special meaning for the historical society he founded.
Preserving History in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Beyond traditional historical research, Gonzales has increasingly explored how digital technology and artificial intelligence can contribute to historical preservation.
As a Filipino voice artist, broadcaster, and advocate of AI-powered storytelling, he has developed initiatives that combine historical narratives with modern media production.
Through projects such as The HistoryTeller PH and Conversations with Rizal, he has demonstrated how emerging technologies can help make historical subjects more accessible and engaging for contemporary audiences.
For the Mariveles Historical Society, these technologies offer possibilities for digitizing archival materials, organizing historical records, preserving oral histories, and creating educational experiences for younger generations.
However, Gonzales also emphasizes that technological innovation must be guided by historical accuracy, ethical interpretation, and respect for original sources.
Artificial intelligence may help communicate history, but it must never replace the careful work of historical research and verification.
A Milestone for Mariveles and Future Generations
The recognition comes at a meaningful time as the Mariveles Historical Society continues its efforts to document the municipality's heritage and share its stories with the broader historical community.
From its establishment in 1998 to the present, the organization's mission has remained consistent: to protect the memory of Mariveles and encourage future generations to appreciate their historical identity.
For Gonzales, becoming a Lifetime Member of the Philippine Historical Association is not the culmination of that mission.
It is another beginning.
It represents an opportunity to pursue more rigorous historical research, strengthen partnerships with fellow historians, and contribute to the preservation of Philippine local history.
Most importantly, it serves as a reminder that the history of a nation is built upon the histories of its towns, families, communities, and ordinary people.
Because the story of Mariveles is not merely a local story. It is part of the greater story of the Filipino people.
And as long as there are stories waiting to be discovered, documents waiting to be examined, and memories waiting to be preserved, the work of the Mariveles Historical Society will continue.
Mabuhay ang Mariveles Historical Society!
Mabuhay ang Philippine Historical Association!
Mabuhay ang Kasaysayan ng Mariveles!
