For local poultry farmers, improving productivity and building a sustainable livelihood can begin with the right knowledge and the right technology.

Through a DOST-CEST funded project, the Provincial Veterinary Department is equipping local poultry farmers with the skills to raise ZamPen Native Chickenโ€”an improved strain developed through research by Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) with support from Department of Science and Technologyโ€“Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD). The improved strain demonstrates faster growth, higher egg production, greater disease resistance, adaptability to varying climatic conditions, lower mortality rates, and faster weight gain.

From August 18โ€“20, 2026, at the Provincial Capitol in Camiguin, participants are taking part in lectures and hands-on field activities facilitated by WMSU researchers Ms. Angela Cristina Jalon and Mr. Archie Matugas.

In his message, Mr. Jason Jay C. Dalman, representing DOST Camiguin, emphasized the relevance of the project in increasing agricultural productivity and supporting the island's goal of become more economically productive and self-sustaining. He underscored that strengthening local poultry production can help ensure a morle stable supply of food while creating opportunities for farmers to increase their income.

Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Lordgin Gamo expressed confidence in the potential of the project to make poultry farming a more profitable livelihood for local farmers. He noted that ZamPen Native Chicken has demonstrated positive market potential, particularly because of its meat quality, which is known for its flavorful taste and excellent tendernessโ€”qualities that are highly valued by consumers.

Science and technology, working hand in hand with our farmers, can help bring food security and sustainable growth closer to every community.

When disasters strike, communities rely on more than just foodโ€”they rely on safe, nutritious, and quality meals. To ensure this, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Camiguin conducted the Food Safety and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) Training for the personnel of the Mambajao Smart Mobile Kitchen on July 8, 2026, at the Mambajao Operation Center, Poblacion, Mambajao, Camiguin.

A total of 23 participants (10 males and 13 females) enhanced their knowledge and skills on food safety hazards, basic food hygiene, sanitation, contamination prevention, and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)โ€”essential competencies for ensuring that every meal prepared during emergency and disaster response operations is safe for affected communities.

The activity also featured a Gender and Development (GAD) Orientation by Engr. Kishon Mareshah L. Villajos, reinforcing the importance of gender responsiveness, equality, and inclusivity in creating a respectful and productive workplace.

In her opening message, Ms. Racquel B. Ranara, Department Head and Local DRRM Officer IV, underscored the critical role of the Smart Mobile Kitchen in disaster response, encouraging participants to uphold the highest standards of food safety in every meal served.

The technical sessions were conducted by Ms. Joanne Katherine R. Banaag, Provincial Director of DOSTโ€“Camiguin and Head of the DOST Region X Food Safety Team, who discussed Food Safety Hazards, followed by Mr. Troy Anthony A. Omol, Science Research Specialist I and member of the DOST Region X Food Safety Team, who led the discussions on Basic Food Hygiene and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

Through science-based knowledge and practical learning, participants are now better equipped to deliver safe, hygienic, and high-quality food assistance, strengthening the Municipality of Mambajao's commitment to resilient and effective disaster response.

Together, let's build safer communitiesโ€”one safe meal at a time.

Producing safe and high-quality food begins with informed and empowered people.

Sixteen (16) employees of Granel's Meatshop participated in the Food Safety and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) Training held on July 7, 2026, at Havendwell Resort, Poblacion, Mambajao, Camiguin. Through this capability-building activity, participants strengthened their knowledge on food safety hazards, proper hygiene, sanitation, contamination prevention, and current Good Manufacturing Practices essential in producing safe, quality meat products.

The activity opened with a Gender and Development (GAD) Orientation by Engr. Kishon Mareshah L. Villajos, highlighting the importance of gender responsiveness and inclusivity in creating a safe, respectful, and productive workplace.

Representing the management, Mr. Nelpher Catacutan emphasized that food safety goes beyond complianceโ€”it reflects the company's values. He encouraged employees to see the training as an investment in their personal and professional growth while sharing Granel's vision of expanding its operations through a committed and empowered workforce.

The technical sessions were facilitated by the DOST Region X Food Safety Team, led by Ms. Joanne Katherine R. Banaag, Provincial Director of DOSTโ€“Camiguin, who discussed Food Safety Hazards through engaging and interactive activities. Mr. Troy Anthony A. Omol, Science Research Specialist I of DOSTโ€“Camiguin, delivered the lectures on Basic Food Hygiene and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), equipping participants with practical knowledge to ensure food quality and safety in meat processing and retail operations.

As the training concluded, participants shared valuable insights on the importance of consistently practicing proper food handling, workplace cleanliness, and food safety standardsโ€”recognizing that these contribute to customer satisfaction, business growth, and the continued success of Granel's Meatshop.

Through science, technology, and innovation, DOST continues to empower local enterprises with the knowledge and skills needed to produce safer food, strengthen consumer trust, and build more competitive businesses.

The Manufacturing Productivity Extension (MPEX) program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has successfully wrapped up its final session for two local businesses in Camiguin, Isla 9100 Restobar in Yumbing, Mambajao, and Teresitaโ€™s Lechon House in Poblacion, Mahinog, marking a significant milestone in their ongoing journey toward enhanced productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness.

Held on August 10, the concluding consultation offered a comprehensive review of the firmsโ€™ progress following earlier assessments and targeted interventions under the MPEX Program, a vital component of the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).

This session focused on evaluating the improvements implemented, discussing the outcomes of recommended strategies, and exploring additional opportunities to further strengthen their operations. Guided by Engr. Geraldine Reyes Lim of Summit Consultancy and Research Services, the firms received actionable recommendations designed to sustain their gains, optimize resource utilization, and address remaining operational challenges.

The final consultation also served as a reflective platform to assess the journey from identifying initial productivity hurdles to executing tailored improvement measures. These initiatives aim to help the firms develop more efficient, organized systems that foster consistent product quality, streamlined workflows, and overall business growth.

As the MPEX program for the 1st semester of 2026 concludes, DOSTโ€“Camiguin remains committed to supporting local MSMEs in adopting practical, science-driven solutions that address operational issues and build resilience for sustainable development.

The stories of Isla 9100 Restobar and Teresitaโ€™s Lechon House showcase how continuous improvement, expert guidance, and innovative approaches can bring meaningful change to daily business operations bringing โ€œAgham na Ramdamโ€ to life for local enterprises and communities.

INNOVATION BEGINS WITH IMAGINATION. ๐Ÿ’ก

During the opening of the 2026 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) in Northern Mindanao, held in Mambajao, Camiguin, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized that while knowledge is the foundation of scientific discovery, imagination is what transforms ideas into innovations that improve lives.

It reminds us that the future is built by those who dare to envision new possibilities, solve today's greatest challenges, and create opportunities for future generations.
