In celebration of World Hearing Day, the Philippine National Ear Institute (PNEI), in collaboration with the UP College of Allied Medical Professions and the Philippine General Hospital Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, conducted a School Hearing Screening on March 4, 2026, at P. Gomez Elementary School, Sta. Cruz, Manila, in partnership with the Schools Division Office – Manila.

The activity successfully screened 45 PGES learners, supporting early identification of hearing concerns and reinforcing the importance of accessible hearing care for every child. The initiative was also supported by PNEI elective interns from San Beda University, who assisted in the conduct of the screening.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our partners and supporters, including Rotary Club of Quirino Manila Central and Manila Hearing Aid, for helping make this initiative possible.

This activity supports the World Hearing Day 2026 theme: “From Communities to Classrooms: Hearing Care for Every Child.” Together, we continue working toward a future where no child is left behind due to hearing loss. 👂

Should I Be Concerned if My Baby Doesn’t Startle at Loud Sounds?

Yes. Babies usually jump, blink, or cry when startled by sudden loud noise. If your baby doesn’t respond, it may indicate hearing impairment.

Ask your pediatrician or ENT for a newborn hearing screen. Early detection is crucial!

Stop Using Cotton Buds to Clean Your Ears!

Using cotton buds may feel satisfying, but it can actually do more harm than good:
⚠️ Pushes wax deeper
⚠️ Increases risk of eardrum perforation
⚠️ Can cause infections or injury
👂 Your ears are self-cleaning—no need to poke inside!

If you have a wax problem, see an ENT specialist.

Protect your ears. Skip the cotton buds!

Can I Still Hear with a Damaged Eardrum?

Yes—some hearing loss is common with a perforated eardrum, but it may improve as the eardrum heals.
👂 ENT specialists may recommend:
🔹 Ear drops
🔹 Protective ear coverings
🔹 Surgery (in some cases)

Early treatment gives the best chance of recovery.
