|| Mudfish (𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘢), locally known as dalag or haruan, has long held a quiet but enduring place in Southeast Asian food culture, not just prized for its rich taste, but also valued in traditional accounts for its supposed medicinal benefits. In the Philippines, it continues to appear consistently among the country’s top aquaculture commodities. In recent years, national output has declined significantly, a trend linked to persistent bottlenecks in hatchery efficiency and limited availability of quality fry. Recognizing this gap, researchers from DA - Fisheries Biotechnology Center (FBC), in collaboration with BFAR-NFFTC and MSU Naawan, explored the effects of photoperiod manipulation on hatchery performance. Photoperiod, or the duration of light exposure, is known to influence feeding behavior, metabolism, and fish growth.

Ginanap noong ika-25 hanggang 26 ng Mayo 2026 sa Tagudin, Ilocos Sur ang programang “Reorganization and Strengthening of Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (MFARMC)”. Layunin ng aktibidad na ito na palakasin ang kapasidad ng konseho at isulong ang mas responsableng pangangalaga sa yamang-tubig sa munisipalidad.

Pinangunahan ng Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) ang programa sa pakikipagtulungan ni LGU-Municipal Agriculturist Dr. Jocelyn L. Lamadrid.

Nagsagawa ng talakayan patungkol sa BFAR Fisherfolk Empowerment Program, ang konsepto ng co-management approach sa Pilipinas, at ang pagpapatupad ng Fisheries Law. Nagkaroon din ng pagsusuri sa mga kaugnay na alituntunin ng Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) at pagsasagawa ng compliance audit sa sektor ng pangisdaan ng LGU.

Kaakibat ng mga talakayan ay ang praktikal na pagsasanay, partikular sa parliamentary procedure para sa mas maayos at epektibong mga pagpupulong ng konseho. Pagsasagawa ng SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) para sa community-based fisheries at pagbuo ng action plan para sa mga susunod na konkretong hakbangin ng konseho tungo sa mas matibay at sustenableng operasyon.

Tampok din ang isinagawang eleksyon at panunumpa sa tungkulin ng mga bagong opisyal ng FARMC, na pinangunahan ni Hon. Mayor Evangeline Verzosa.

Nagtapos ang aktibidad sa presentasyon ng mga nabuong output, pagbabalik-tugon ng mga kalahok, at pangwakas na pananalita mula sa mga kinatawan ng BFAR-Region 1 at LGU.

‎Opisyal nang tinapos ng BFAR Region 1 ang selebrasyon ng Buwan ng Magsasaka at Mangingisda, Mangingisdang Direktor Program, at Buwan ng Karagatan sa pamamagitan ng simbolikong pagpapalitan ng susi at sagwan, na sumisimbolo sa maayos na paglipat ng tungkulin at patuloy na pagkakaisa sa pagsusulong ng kapakanan ng sektor ng pangisdaan.

‎Sa isinagawang special meeting ngayong araw, June 1, inilahad ni Edmar Carsola ang kanyang mga nagawa sa loob ng isang buwang panunungkulan bilang Mangingisdang Direktor 2026 ng rehiyon.
‎
‎Ipinahayag niya ang kanyang taos-pusong pasasalamat sa masisipag at maaasikasong kawani ng ahensya mula Pangasinan hanggang Ilocos Norte. Ibinahagi rin niya ang mga magagandang inisyatibong kanyang nasaksihan, kabilang ang DSIP at SAAD, at nagbigay ng mga rekomendasyon para sa higit pang pagpapabuti ng mga pasilidad ng opisina.

‎Nagbigay naman ang bawat Operating Unit Head ng kanilang mga komento, feedback, mensahe, at munting handog bilang pagkilala sa kanyang naging panunungkulan.

‎Samantala, ibinahagi rin ni Regional Director Remely B. Lachica ang mga mahahalagang aktibidad at nagawa sa buong panahon ng selebrasyon. Kabilang dito ang MOA Signing ng SIKAP-LINAK; mga konsultasyon at dayalogo kasama ang DSWD, mga LGU, at mga mangingisdang naapektuhan ng red tide sa Anda at Bolinao; konsultasyon para sa itatayong Shared Service Facility para sa mga salt producer sa Dasol; MOA Signing para sa sea cucumber production sa Infanta; sea cucumber seeding; fish fingerlings turn over and dispersal; ulang stocking sa BASIL area ng Rosales, Pangasinan; at dayalogo kasama ang LGU-Rosales at SAMAPA kaugnay ng Fish Trading Initiative sa Rosales Farmers Market, kabilang ang trial run nito sa pamamagitan ng Kadiwa on Wheels.

Though they stay in one place, they do the massive job of sheltering over 25% of all marine life. BFAR-RFO 1 invites everyone to be proactive stewards of our underwater habitats.
