Economists are raising concerns over the recently signed PH–US trade agreement, warning that it may do more harm than good for local industries. While the deal slightly lowers U.S. tariffs on Philippine exports—from 20% to 19%—it completely removes Philippine tariffs on American automobiles, potentially putting local manufacturers at a disadvantage.

Experts caution that the agreement could deepen the country's economic dependency without offering clear, tangible benefits in return. Many are calling on the government to provide safeguards such as export tax relief, support for industry diversification, and thorough sector-by-sector impact assessments. Transparency and public consultation are also being urged before the deal’s full implementation.
