92 YEARS AGO TODAY — Nadiskubre ang “Pearl of Allah” sa Brooke’s Point, Palawan na itinuturing na isa sa pinakamalaking perlas sa mundo

Isa pa rin sa pinakamalalaking natural na perlas sa buong mundo ang tinaguriang “Pearl of Allah” o “Pearl of Lao Tzu” na nadiskubre sa karagatan ng Brooke’s Point, Palawan noong Mayo 7, 1934.

Batay sa mga tala, isang Pilipinong maninisid ang nakatagpo sa higanteng perlas sa loob ng isang taklobo o Tridacna gigas habang sumisisid sa karagatan ng Brooke’s Point.

Tumitimbang ang perlas ng humigit-kumulang 6.4 kilo at may habang halos 24 sentimetro. Hindi ito tulad ng karaniwang makinang at bilog na perlas dahil mayroon itong puting kulay at kakaibang “brain-like” na anyo.

Pinangalanan itong “Pearl of Allah” ng isang Muslim chieftain dahil umano sa pagkakahawig ng hugis nito sa ulo ng propetang si Muhammad na may turban.

Kalaunan, nakilala rin ito bilang “Pearl of Lao Tzu.”

Sa loob ng maraming dekada, itinuring itong pinakamalaking natural pearl sa buong mundo bago ito nahigitan ng ibang nadiskubreng higanteng perlas gaya ng Giga Pearl.

Noong 1939, dinala sa Amerika ang perlas ni Wilburn Dowell Cobb matapos umano itong ibigay ng isang lokal na pinuno bilang pasasalamat sa pagtulong nito sa anak na may sakit.

Sa kasalukuyan, hawak na ito ng mga pribadong may-ari at bihira nang maipakita sa publiko.

On this day in 1934, one of the largest known pearls in the world, the Pearl of Allah, also known as the Pearl of Lao Tzu or the Pearl of Lao Tse, was discovered in Palawan.
