PALAWAN, EL NIDO, far from the white sand beaches and tourist lime stone formations, is a budding charcoal and timber trade unmindfull to authorities and slowly decimating whatever is left of El Nido's forests in Barangay Bagumbayan. According to NGO paraenforcers of PNNI and personnel from the MNLF Rajah Amir Bahar command, this activity has long been conducted without government enforcement owing to the approximately ten (10) hectares of cleared forests. The charcoal and hot lumber are allegedly loaded in closed vans that freely pass by check points with relative ease. Confiscated from the area is a marble plastic shot gun used to scare authorities from pursuing the violators. The said item is deadly and can bring down a man at medium range. The chainsaw was not seized as it was transported out to safety upon ascent of the team to the cutting area. PNNI has been pushing for a more aggressive enforcement program from governmemt agencies whose focus seems to be on tourism, business, and development. And with the current set up of having check points rather than forest patrols, it is highly unlikely that El Nido's forests will remain protected.
