A vision for a better world begins with action. This September, the IZN Unit and Futures Thinking and Strategic Foresight, in collaboration with the Internationalization Leadership Council brings the Sustainable Development Goals closer to our community through a month-long celebration of ideas, action, creativity, and shared purpose. It is a call to look beyond ourselves, recognize the challenges that shape our world, and discover the role each of us can play in creating a future that leaves no one behind.

From awareness to advocacy, from conversations to action, let this yearโ€™s SDG Month be more than a celebration. Let it be a movementโ€”one that sparks curiosity, empowers voices, and turns vision into meaningful change.

The future is waiting. The question is: what will we do to shape it?

Stay tuned and join us as we move forward together, one goal, one voice, and one action at a time.

Davao de Oro State College President Dr. Lilybeth M. Matunhay and two College officials joined academics and professionals from across the globe as invited speakers in the two-day International Conference on Building Sustainability and a Resilient Future: Global Perspectives, Innovations and Collaborative Pathways, held on August 21โ€“22, 2026.

Dr. Matunhay presented โ€œThe Role of Regional Higher Education Institutions in Sustainable Resource-Based Communities,โ€ highlighting the place of higher education institutions in advancing sustainability within communities whose development and livelihoods are closely linked to natural and local resources.

She discussed how higher education, as an important institutional actor, is involved in conversations on sustainable and resilient community development.

Organized by the Research Cell and Department of Geography of Dr. Bhupendra Nath Dutta Smriti Mahavidyalaya in West Bengal, India, the international conference was conducted in collaboration with the Swiss Institute of Management and Sciences (SIMS) in Switzerland and the Forum for Indigenous Agricultural Movement (FIAM) in India.

Themed โ€œBuilding a Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Future,โ€ the gathering provided a platform for scholars, researchers, policymakers, civil society organizations, professionals, and students from across the globe to discuss interconnected environmental, social, economic, technological, and cultural challenges and explore innovative approaches toward sustainability and resilience.

Joining Dr. Matunhay were Lovely Mae F. Deoric, LPT, MMEP, EnP, Planning Officer II and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Focal Person, and Karesha Faith C. Caรฑetan, MALE-ENG, Internationalization Unit Head.

Deoric, meanwhile, discussed โ€œEchoes of Gold and Green: Academic-LGU Governance and Community-based Pathways for Sustainable Ecotourism in Davao de Oro, Philippines,โ€ highlighting academe-LGU collaboration and community-based approaches to sustainable ecotourism.

In her talk, she underscored the role of institutional planning and cross-sector partnerships in advancing locally responsive sustainable development initiatives.

Caรฑetan presented โ€œA Comparative Perspective on Sustainability, Teacher Development, Digital Innovation, and Internationalization,โ€ focusing on key areas shaping the future of higher education.

Apart from being an international invited speaker, Caรฑetan was designated Joint Session Co-Chair of Technical Session 2 alongside representatives from other higher education institutions.
She was also named to the eventโ€™s international Advisory Committee, representing Davao de Oro State College alongside academics and institutional leaders from Japan, Switzerland, Poland, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, India, the United States, and the Philippines.

The participation of Dr. Matunhay, Deoric, and Caรฑetan brought DdOSCโ€™s perspectives on regional higher education, sustainable development, academe-government collaboration, teacher development, digital innovation, and internationalization into a broader exchange with academics and professionals from several countries.

Furthermore, this engagement also strengthened the institutionโ€™s international academic engagement, while highlighting our commitment to contributing locally grounded perspectives from Davao de Oro to global conversations on sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development.

Strengthening collaboration, fostering innovation, and advancing regional integration through higher education.

On June 16, 2026, representatives from member Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) gathered for the 2nd Quarter Face-to-Face Meeting of PEHEIC at Agusan del Sur State University in Bunawan. The delegates were warmly welcomed by University President Dr. Joy C. Capistrano, who emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnership in promoting educational excellence and regional development.

The meeting, led by PEHEIC President Dr. Hanlie A. Taha, served as a platform to discuss the consortium's strategic directions, strengthen institutional partnerships, and advance collaborative initiatives in research, academic mobility, membership expansion, and internationalization. Representatives from Commission on Higher Education Regional Office XI, Mindanao Development Authority, and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority participated both onsite and virtually, enriching the discussions and reinforcing inter-agency cooperation.

A notable highlight of the meeting was the formal welcome of Davao de Oro State College as the newest member of the consortium, further strengthening PEHEIC's network of institutions committed to excellence, innovation, and regional development.

As a consortium of higher education institutions within the Philippine areas of the BIMP-EAGA, PEHEIC remains dedicated to fostering meaningful collaboration that supports the growth, competitiveness, and sustainable development of the region through education, research, innovation, and international engagement.

Together, we continue to build a more connected, resilient, and prosperous BIMP-EAGA community.
