Basay, Negros Oriental โ€” The Basay District 1 Athletic Meet officially concluded at Basay National High School on September 4, 2026, after two days of intense competition held from September 3-4, 2026.

The closing program gathered athletes, coaches, tournament officials, and participating schools to celebrate achievements and sportsmanship throughout the meet.

The program opened with words of appreciation from Mrs. Melanie T. Feril, Principal of Andres V. Fortugaleza National High School (AVFNHS), who expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the athletic meet.

Following her message, the AVFNHS Dancesport Team showcased their talent in Standard and Latin disciplines. Phelip James B. Tomido and Yzabelle T. Dela Cerna performed in the Standard category, while Shin G. Binondo and Faith Marie P. Tumimbang represented the Latin category. AVFNHS was the lone school competing in dancesport.

Recognition was then given to the tournament managers and the participating schools: Linantayan National High School, Andres V. Fortugaleza National High School, Basay National High School, Cabalayongan Rural Farm School, Don Pablo Carmen Blanco Utzurrum Memorial Elementary School (DPCBUMES), Olandao Elementary School, and Linantayan Elementary School.

The Storm Chasers of Linantayan National High School were also awarded Best Yell for their outstanding performance during the yell competition on the first day.

September 4, 2026โ€”The Mighty Marlins Boys' Volleyball Team staged a thrilling comeback to defeat the Barracuda, 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-21, and claim the gold medal in the District Meet 2026 at the Poblacion Basay Gymnasium, securing their ticket to the Division Meet.

The intense championship battle drew a packed crowd, with supporters from both teams filling the gymnasium with chants, yells, and rhythmic banging, creating an electrifying atmosphere.

At the start of the match, the Barracuda came out strong and quickly established an early 11-5 lead, forcing the Mighty Marlins to call a timeout. However, the pause failed to stop their momentum. Behind Austero's precise spikes, the Barracuda maintained control and took the opening set, 25-17.

In contrast, the second set saw both teams exchange powerful attacks in a tightly contested battle. With the score tied at 17-17, the Mighty Marlins finally found an opening as Moraca and Parungao's quick-spike combination sparked a decisive 8-3 run, allowing the Marlins to seize the set, 25-18, and even the match at one set apiece.

Meanwhile, neither team showed signs of fatigue in the third set as the battle intensified. Both squads fought relentlessly for every point, but Padillo's timely and sneaky spikes gave the Mighty Marlins a crucial edge. As a result, the Marlins held their composure in the crucial moments and edged out the Barracuda, 25-23, to take a 2-1 lead.

In the final set, the Mighty Marlins opened aggressively, building an early three-point lead. However, the Barracuda didn't back down and fought back to tie the score at 13-13, keeping the championship within reach. In the end, with heavy hitters Jaudian and Gabo delivering crucial attacks, the Mighty Marlins regained control and pulled away in the closing points to secure the set, 25-21, and the championship.

Mighty Marlins trainer Dave Franciss Antique highlighted the importance of perseverance, saying, "We always tell our athletes that if the game is not yet done, we can still win."

True to those words, the Mighty Marlins refused to give up after dropping the opening set.

Ultimately, the Mighty Marlins captured the gold medal and advanced to the Division Meet, while the Barracuda settled for silver and Linantayan NHS secured the bronze.

The Andres V. Fortugaleza National High School Maroon Barracuda dismantled the Basay National High School Mighty Marlins in a commanding straight set victory, 25-18, 25-9, 25-16 to capture the girlsโ€™ volleyball championship at the District Meet 2026 on September 4 at the Poblacion Basay Gymnasium.

The Barracuda had to dig deep early in the opening frame. Facing a 15-16 deficit, AVFNHS engineered a momentum swing behind solid net defense, seamless communication, and aggressive attacking plays to close the set on a decisive run, 25-18.

The second set was a masterclass in domination. Briones hammered down powerful kills, Cojas orchestrated the offense with precise sets, Sayson built a wall at the net with crucial rejections, and Baluya fired a barrage of service aces to widen the gap and dominate the set, 25-9.

The Marlins tried to force an extension in the third set. After Baluya opened the frame with an ace, BNHS battled back to knot the score at 13-all. However, the Barracuda showed championship composure, pulling away late with a strong finishing kick to seal the crown, 25-16.

Rudy Lyn Briones was named Game MVP as the AVFNHS Barracuda completed their 3-0 championship run, earning the district crown and punching their ticket to the Division Meet.

The Mighty Marlins overpowered the Barracuda, ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ’-๐Ÿ”๐ŸŽ, in the 5x5 basketball tournament of the District Athletic Meet 2026 at the Poblacion Gymnasium on thursday morning, September 3.

Both teams opened strong, finishing the first quarter tied at 8.

The Marlins pulled away in the second quarter behind Bantad's offense and Pamor's defense to take a 43-34 lead at halftime.

The Barracuda tried to close the gap in the second half, but with Dela Cerna out, they could not keep up with Manilag's court vision and Narciso's fast breaks.

The Marlins stretched the lead in the final period to seal the 24-point victory, ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ’-๐Ÿ”๐ŸŽ.

The Andres V. Fortugaleza National High School (AVFNHS) Maroon Barracuda finally ended its years-long gold medal drought after edging the Basay National High School (BNHS) Mighty Marlins, 2-1, in the Boys' Sepaktakraw all to play competition of the District Meet '26 on September 3 at the grounds of Basay National High School.

In the first game, the Barracuda drew first blood despite a slow start. Although the Marlins seized the early lead, AVFNHS rallied to claim the opening set, 15-13.

Building on that momentum, the Barracuda then maintained control in the second set, 15-11, to seal the victory.

Powering Regu 1 for AVFNHS were John Michael Pepito, Julius Benting, John A***n Tingson, and Andro Embalsado.

Meanwhile, in the second game, the Barracuda continued their impressive run. Once again, BNHS took an early advantage; however, AVFNHS erased the deficit to take the first set, 15-13.

Afterward, the team closed out the match with a decisive 15-10 win.

Representing AVFNHS in Regu 2 were Vincent Ezra Bunyag, Shane Steven Paran, Deejay Comahig, and Robie Bryan Naval.

On the other hand, the third and final game went in favor of the Mighty Marlins.

At first, the Barracuda escaped with a thrilling 17-15 win in the opening set after deadlocks at 13 and 14.

Nevertheless, the Marlins quickly bounced back, answering with a 15-10 victory in the second set.

Consequently, BNHS pulled away in the deciding set, 15-7, to sn**ch a win from the Barracudas.

Leading Regu 3 for the Marlins were Carlo Timbal, Niรฑo Jay Postrano, and Vince Lean Alabastro.

Ultimately, with a 2-1 overall win, the Maroon Barracuda secured AVFNHS its first-ever Boys' Sepaktakraw gold medal at the District Meet, officially putting an end to the school's long gold medal drought in the event.

The Marlins pulled off a heart-stopping 17-16 escape in the opening set, but the Barracuda bounced back with a 15-10 win in the second set to force a decider.

In the final set, the Marlins regained their rhythm and sealed the championship with another 15-10 victory.
