Although in some cases it may derive from the medieval female personal name Estrella, also a Marian name (María de la Estrella) or from a nickname, in most instances it was probably a habitational name from any of the numerous places named Estrella or from La Estrella in Toledo; other possibilities are a topographic name for someone who lived at a place from which roads radiated out in a star shape or a habitational name for someone who lived at a house distinguished by the sign of a star.
