Every April 9, we honor the bravery and sacrifice of our heroes during World War II, especially in the Battle of Bataan and the Bataan Death March, a powerful reminders of courage, resilience, and love for country.

As today’s generation, may we, the youth, carry forward their legacy by standing for what is right, serving our communities, and becoming active partners in nation-building.

EDSA 40: Hindi Na Tayo Pipikit

Isang paalala na ang kalayaan ay hindi minana—ito’y patuloy na ipinaglalaban. Sa ika-40 taon ng EDSA, piliin nating maging mapanuri, matapang, at gising. ✊🇵🇭

𝘼𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙖𝙜-𝙖𝙨𝙖 𝙖𝙮 𝙉𝙖𝙜𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙡𝙖 𝙨𝙖 𝙃𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙞 𝙋𝙖𝙜𝙥𝙞𝙠𝙞𝙩

May mga umagang hindi lamang sumisikat ang araw sumisikat ang kamalayan. May mga lansangang hindi lamang tinatahak inaangkin ng kasaysayan. Apatnapung taon na ang nakalilipas nang ang ordinaryong mamamayan ay naging pambihira, nang ang takot ay napalitan ng tapang, at ang katahimikan ay naging kolektibong tinig. Ang EDSA ay hindi lamang kalsada; ito’y isang paalala na kapag ang bayan ay nagpasiyang tumindig, kahit ang pinakamatayog na kapangyarihan ay maaaring yumuko. Ngunit ang tanong na dapat umalingawngaw ngayon ay hindi na kung kaya ba nating magkaisakundi kung handa pa ba tayong panindigan ang pagkakaisang iyon sa harap ng bagong anyo ng panlilinlang.

Sa paglipas ng apat na dekada, nag-iba ang kasuotan ng katiwalian. Hindi na ito laging lantad at marahas; madalas itong maamo ang tinig, makulay ang kampanya, at bihasa sa pagbaluktot ng katotohanan. Sa panahong ang impormasyon ay kay bilis kumalat ngunit ang katotohanan ay tila kailangang ipaglaban, lalong nagiging mahalaga ang mapanuring mamamayan. Hindi sapat ang paggunita sa nakaraan kung ang kasalukuyan ay hinahayaan nating maagnas. Ang pamahalaan ay dapat paalalahanan araw-araw na ang kapangyarihang hawak nila ay hiniram lamang mula sa taumbayan. Ito’y hindi trono na minamana, kundi tiwalang maaaring bawiin.

Kaya’t ang panawagan ay dalawa ngunit iisa ang ugat: maging mas mabuti ang pamahalaan, at maging mas matalino ang mamamayan sa pagpili. Huwag nating gawing aliwan ang halalan, o paligsahan ng pinakamatunog na apelyido. Ang balota ay hindi pabor na ibinibigay; ito’y pananagutang ipinapasa natin sa susunod na henerasyon. Ang bawat boto ay may katumbas na silid-aralang maaaring maitayo o manatiling guho, ospital na maaaring gumaling o manatiling kulang, kabataang maaaring mangarap o mapilitang sumuko. Kung nais nating umayos ang sistema, kailangan nating itaas ang pamantayan hindi lamang sa mga kandidato kundi sa ating sarili bilang mga botante.

Higit sa lahat, ang demokrasya ay hindi natatapos sa araw ng eleksiyon. Nagsisimula ito roon. Ang tunay na pagmamahal sa bayan ay nasusukat sa ating pagbabantay: sa pagtatanong kung saan napunta ang pondo, sa paghingi ng malinaw na ulat, sa pagtutol kapag may mali. Ang katahimikan sa harap ng pang-aabuso ay hindi neutralidad ito’y pahintulot. At kung may aral mang dapat dalhin ng ika-40 anibersaryo ng EDSA, ito’y ang katotohanang ang kalayaan ay hindi isang minsanang tagumpay kundi pang-araw-araw na pagpili.
