During the “TAKUS: Exploring Nene Lungay’s Life & Art Through Lecture”, Ar. Edeliza V. Macalandag shared personal encounters with Hermogena "Nene" Borja Lungay, reflecting on how Ma’am Nene served as a constant beacon of inspiration for young and emerging female visual artists in Bohol. As a writer-member of Kaliwat ni Karyapa, a collective of Boholano writers, Ar. Liza fondly recalled how Ma’am Nene and her family generously opened their home to host their gatherings. It was also with Ma’am Nene’s blessing and encouragement that the Baji Arts Collective, a multi-arts group of Boholana women visual artists, was born.

For Ma’am Nene, art was never distant or intimidating, it was seamlessly woven into everyday life. She shared her passion for painting with a warmth that invited everyone in. Describing Ma’am Nene as a true painter of Boholano life, Ar. Liza emphasized that her art was never about herself, but rather a selfless celebration of community. Ma’am Nene embodied katakus, not only as a master artist, but as an extraordinary woman.

Anchoring on her legacy, Ar. Liza encouraged Boholano artists to draw strength and inspiration from Ma’am Nene’s profound sense of worthiness, using their creative talents to highlight and elevate the true worthiness of Bohol itself.

In a touching tribute to Hermogena "Nene" Borja Lungay, acclaimed Boholano writer and biographer Dr. Marjorie Evasco-Pernia highlighted Ma’am Nene's role as a pioneer of visual arts in Bohol. Graduating cm laude as the sole female student in her 1953 class at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts, alongside fellow Boholano National Artist Napoleon Abueva, Ma’am Nene returned home embodying an extraordinary, deeply rooted "keen sense of place." She brought back a vision that was, in many ways, far ahead of its time for a Bohol that is still awakening to the visual arts.

Dr. Marjorie portrayed Ma’am Nene as a three-dimensional human being, an exemplar of quiet strength, courage, and devotion. Even during a 25-year hiatus from actively painting on canvas to care for her household, her creative fire never diminished. When Dr. Marjorie asked where her art went during those years, Ma’am Nene revealed that she never stopped: "I painted with my head, how I would mix that color, what kind of hues, what strokes." This pure, undiluted artistic spirit led cultural icon Prof. Marianito Luspo to observe that "her art is so thick, nothing can dilute it. Pure and true."

Anchoring Ma’am Nene’s legacy as a guiding light for emerging talents, Dr. Marjorie offered a timeless message for every Boholano artist: "Do your work for beauty, do it for Bohol, and do it for yourself."

As a UNESCO Global Geopark, Bohol honors artistic pioneers as vital keepers of our territorial memory and cultural identity. Opening the event with deep reverence at the National Museum of the Philippines – Bohol on October 22, 2026, Ms. Rachelle Lacea, Head of the National Museum of the Philippines – Bohol, delivered a touching welcome address that underscored the heart of the gathering. She emphasized the profound meaning behind the event's title, sharing: "We deliberately used the word 'takus' or worthy, kay takus siyang ilhon, takus siyang hinumduman".

Highlighting the importance of honoring female cultural icons who shaped the province's visual heritage, Ms. Lacea reminded everyone of the broader mission behind commemorating Hermogena "Nene" Borja Lungay. She urged the audience to reflect on the lasting value of local art and storytelling: "May this afternoon remind us that the story of our Boholano artists, especially our women artists, are stories worth telling, worth remembering, and certainly takus, worthy of being celebrated and preserved."

𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒: 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫-𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩

Step into the field as learning transformed into firsthand discovery during Day 2 of the International Geodiversity Day Seminar-Workshop last October 16, 2026, taking our participants on an immersive geotour across key geological and cultural heritage sites.

The journey began at the Geopark Information Center, where participants learned about the milestone story of Bohol's designation as the country's first UNESCO Global Geopark, and gained a deep foundational understanding of our island before diving into Bohol's rich natural and cultural history at the National Museum of the Philippines – Bohol. From there, the tour proceeded to the coastal town of Maribojoc to explore the marvelous Maribojoc Uplifted Marine Terrace and the historical Punta Cruz Watchtower. Beyond observing these striking coastal landforms created by tectonic forces, participants engaged in a hands-on workshop focused on brainstorming sustainable development plans and geo-interpretation strategies for the site.

In the afternoon, the participants visited the Collapsed Hill in Sagbayan, where a deeply moving focus group discussion was held alongside local residents. Together, participants and community members commemorated the 2013 M7.2 Bohol Earthquake, sharing personal stories of survival, reflection, and community-led recovery, a poignant reminder of geological hazards, human resilience, and the importance of disaster risk reduction. To cap off an inspiring and insightful day, the group enjoyed a refreshing visit to the Bohol Chocolate Farm in Sagbayan, highlighting local gastronomy and sustainable agritourism practices tied directly to our unique terrain.

As a UNESCO Global Geopark, Bohol Island continues to leverage geoeducation, community dialogues, and sustainable geotourism to foster deeper connections between people and the earth. By experiencing our geological features in the field and listening directly to local voices, we empower communities to protect our geological identity, learn from natural processes, and build a more resilient future together.

On October 15, 2026, at Kew Hotel, Tagbilaran City, we officially kicked off Day 1 of the International Geodiversity Day Seminar-Workshop!

The gathering opened with warm welcome remarks from our Geopark Program Manager, Ms. Joanne M. Pinat, setting a collaborative tone for the day. This was followed by inspiring messages of support from Vice Governor Hon. Nicanor Pacifico Besas and Deputy Executive Director Ms. Lindsay Barrientos, EnP from the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, reinforcing government and institutional backing for geoconservation. Attendees were then treated to an insightful Keynote Address by Martina Stupar, who shared valuable perspectives on this year’s theme of “Geodiversity on our Doorstep”. A deeply moving commemoration of the 2013 M7.2 Bohol Earthquake was also delivered by Dr. Anthony Damalerio, honoring nature’s power and the resilience of the Boholano people.

The day's core was driven by thematic panel sessions featuring dedicated panel speakers, followed by engaging roundtable discussions where participants jumped into creative, hands-on doorstep activities, from drawing local geosites and composing Geopark-advocacy songs to pitching action plans and participating in real-time Mentimeter interactive polls.

We were also honored to learn and inspired by the presentations from the leaders of Northern Samar Aspiring Geopark and Mt. Apo Aspiring Geopark, highlighting the growing national movement for UNESCO Global Geoparks in the Philippines. The day concluded with a special screenings of selected CineByahe and SineBohol films, bringing geological and cultural heritage to life through visual storytelling.

A major milestone of this event was the meaningful participation of students and representatives from the Bohol Deaf Academy. For the first time, Filipino Sign Language (FSL) interpretation was fully integrated throughout all sessions, ensuring a genuinely inclusive, accessible, and barrier-free platform for Geopark learning and advocacy.

As a UNESCO Global Geopark, Bohol Island continues to pioneer inclusive geoconservation, disaster resilience education, and community-wide involvement. By uniting diverse voices, scientific discourse, and accessible communication, we strengthen our collective commitment to safeguarding our planet's geodiversity and nurturing dedicated stewards across all walks of life.
