The 𝑩𝒐𝒉𝒐𝒍 𝑰𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑼𝑵𝑬𝑺𝑪𝑶 𝑮𝒍𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒍 𝑮𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒌 warmly congratulates the 𝐄𝐬𝐤𝐚𝐲𝐚 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬/𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 (𝐈𝐂𝐂𝐬/𝐈𝐏𝐬) on the historic approval of their 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞 (𝐂𝐀𝐃𝐓) application by the 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 (𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐏) through its 10th Commission led by Secretary and Chairperson Nancy Catamco.

The approval covering approximately 𝟑,𝟏𝟎𝟔.𝟑𝟖𝟑𝟗 𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬 is a significant recognition of the Eskaya people’s enduring rights to their ancestral domain under 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐜𝐭 𝐍𝐨. 𝟖𝟑𝟕𝟏 or the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA). More than a legal milestone, this achievement honors the Eskaya community’s identity, culture, traditional knowledge, and deep spiritual connection to the land they have protected for generations.

As a 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤, Bohol recognizes that indigenous communities play a vital role in safeguarding heritage, biodiversity, and sustainable landscapes. May this historic victory inspire continued unity, cultural preservation, and community empowerment for the Eskaya people and future generations of Boholanos.

𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲

In celebration of the 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, an environmental activity was organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in collaboration with PADO PSDAC, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), bringing together around 30 volunteer divers committed to protecting and preserving Bohol’s rich marine ecosystems.

As part of the 𝐁𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐥 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤, our coastal and marine environments are not only sources of livelihood and tourism but are also globally recognized natural treasures that reflect the unique biodiversity and geological significance of the island. Through collective action and strong community participation, initiatives like this highlight the important role of collaboration in safeguarding our oceans for future generations.

This activity serves as a reminder that protecting the sea is a shared responsibility. From government agencies to local communities and volunteers, every effort contributes to cleaner waters, healthier coral reefs, and a more sustainable future for Bohol — 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔’ 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑼𝑵𝑬𝑺𝑪𝑶 𝑮𝒍𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒍 𝑮𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒌.

The Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark went to Lila to celebrate International Biodiversity Day, highlighting the power of community action in protecting our shared environment. Spearheaded by the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office in collaboration with the officials of Barangay Tiguis, a coastal clean-up activity was conducted to help preserve the rich marine biodiversity that sustains both nature and local communities.

A brief orientation on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Bohol as a UNESCO Global Geopark was also conducted to raise awareness on the importance of conservation, sustainable practices, and community participation in protecting our natural heritage. Discussions also included the assessment and observations on the unique natural beauty of the waterfalls by the sea, emphasizing the need for proper site management and stronger community stewardship to protect the area from human activities such as improper waste disposal and pollution.

As the Philippines’ first and only UNESCO Global Geopark, Bohol continues to show that protecting biodiversity starts within the community. Every collective action, from coastal clean-ups to environmental education, helps safeguard our ecosystems for future generations.

Together, let us continue to act locally for global impact, because caring for biodiversity means caring for life itself.

Today, we proudly celebrate the anniversary of the designation of the 𝐁𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐥 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬’ 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤.

This recognition is more than a title. It is a responsibility entrusted to every Boholano.

A Geopark is not only about protecting nature. It is about protecting identity, culture, heritage, and the future. It reminds us that every hill, coastline, mangrove, reef, cave, and community holds a story worth preserving for the next generation. Through sustainable tourism, environmental stewardship, local livelihood, education, and community participation, the Geopark creates opportunities that benefit both people and planet.

As one Bohol, we can embrace this designation by becoming guardians of our environment, supporting local products and communities, preserving our traditions, practicing responsible tourism, and teaching the youth the value of our natural and cultural heritage. The future of the Geopark does not rest on institutions alone, it lives in the collective actions of every Boholano.

To our communities, partners, advocates, youth, tourism stakeholders, local government units, fisherfolk, farmers, educators, and every proud Boholano — thank you for being part of this journey.

From the vibrant coral reefs of the 𝑫𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒋𝒐𝒏 𝑫𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒆𝒇, the rich mangrove forests and marine sanctuaries, to the forests, caves, rivers, and unique wildlife that thrive across our island, 𝑩𝒐𝒉𝒐𝒍 𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒔𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒔 that sustain livelihoods, food security, tourism, and ecological balance. But today, biodiversity around the world faces growing threats from climate change, pollution, habitat loss, and unsustainable practices.

This year’s International Day for Biological Diversity theme, “𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭,” reminds us that meaningful change begins within our own communities. Every tree planted, every coastal cleanup conducted, every protected habitat preserved, and every local conservation effort contributes to a healthier planet for future generations.

Beneath the clear waters of 𝑪𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒐 𝑰𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅, divers found no Crown-of-Thorns starfish, but discovered a pressing concern: the presence of marine debris affecting the health of our seas. Cleaner oceans mean healthier coral reefs, stronger fisheries, and a more resilient future for coastal communities within the Bohol Island Geopark.

On May 5, 2026, a joint 𝑺𝒄𝒖𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒓𝒐 and Crown-of-Thorns (COT) monitoring activity was conducted at Cabilao Island, Loon, Bohol, led by the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office (BPEMO) and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), in partnership with DENR-CENRO Tagbilaran and Sea Explorers Resort. Organized by CLEC Cluster 2 and supported by the LGU of Loon, the activity formed part of the Month of the Ocean 2026 celebration with the theme “𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒄𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉, 𝑺𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏,” where approximately 𝟏𝟒𝟓 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝.

While 𝐧𝐨 𝐂𝐎𝐓𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐝, highlighting reef resilience, the significant volume of waste underscores the continuing challenge of marine pollution. This calls for stronger collective action, support coastal cleanups, practice responsible waste management, and 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐥 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞? In Dimiao, Bohol, the answer surfaced through teamwork, science, and community participation beneath the waves.

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 means better protection of fisheries, healthier marine ecosystems, and more sustainable livelihoods for communities within the Bohol Island Geopark.

From April 27–30, 2026, the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office (BPEMO) – Coastal Resource Management Division joined the Participatory Coastal Resource Assessment (PCRA) in Dimiao, in collaboration with BFAR Region 7, DENR-CENRO Tagbilaran, BISU Candijay Campus, the Philippine Coast Guard Substation Dimiao, a Peace Corps Volunteer, and the LGU Dimiao through its Municipal Agriculture Office. The activity included focus group discussions, transect walks, seagrass and mangrove assessments, and underwater surveys.

Findings showed a healthy reef system with active fish communities, where damselfishes (“pata”) were most common, along with parrotfishes (“mol-mol”) and fusiliers (“solid”), indicating productive coastal habitats.

These results provide a critical baseline for science-based coastal resource management planning in Dimiao.
