Healthcare Crisis Deepens in Hunza as Calls Grow for Specialist Doctors at Aliabad Hospital
HUNZA: Concerns over healthcare services in Hunza have intensified after former GBA-6 candidate and former PPP Hunza President Zahoor Karim Advocate urged authorities to immediately fill vacant specialist positions at the Headquarters Civil Hospital in Aliabad.
Speaking on the issue, Zahoor Karim highlighted that the district’s largest public healthcare facility has been operating without a pediatrician and an ultrasound specialist for several months. He said the shortage has forced hundreds of patients, particularly children and economically disadvantaged families to travel long distances or seek expensive private treatment.
Karim noted that the absence of essential medical services has placed an additional burden on residents from remote parts of Hunza who rely on the government hospital for basic healthcare needs. He expressed disappointment that repeated appeals through public forums and media reports have not resulted in corrective action.
Calling the situation a serious public welfare concern, he urged the Gilgit-Baltistan administration to prioritize the deployment of qualified specialists to Aliabad Hospital without further delay. He specifically appealed to the Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan, Secretary Health, and other relevant authorities to intervene and address the issue.
He also requested the Deputy Commissioner Hunza to take practical steps to facilitate the appointment process and ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for local residents.
Warning that public frustration is growing, Zahoor Karim said citizens may resort to peaceful protest if the longstanding issue remains unresolved. He maintained that the responsibility for any such situation would rest with the provincial government and concerned administrative departments.
