Building Disaster Awareness from an Early Age | Students of Rupani Academy Visit GBDMA

Around 60 students of Rupani Academy Gilgit, accompanied by four faculty members, visited the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) Headquarters today from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM as part of an awareness and learning initiative on disaster risk reduction, preparedness and prevention.

The students were received and briefed by Director General GBDMA, Mr. Ata ur Rehman Kakar, PAS, who interacted with the young participants on the importance of understanding disaster risks and developing a culture of prevention and preparedness rather than relying solely on response after a disaster occurs.

The students were briefed about the major natural hazards faced by Gilgit-Baltistan and the role of GBDMA in preparedness, coordination, emergency response, relief and recovery. Special emphasis was placed on personal and community safety, including precautions while travelling in the mountainous areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, following weather and early-warning advisories, avoiding vulnerable locations during adverse weather, and responding appropriately during emergencies.

As an important practical component of the visit, the students also visited the Humanitarian Response Facility (HRF). They were shown the emergency and relief stores maintained at the facility and briefed about the purpose, utility and deployment of different relief items during disasters and emergency situations. This provided the students with a practical understanding of how preparedness undertaken before a disaster enables a timely and coordinated response when an emergency occurs.

The session remained highly interactive, with students actively participating, asking questions and sharing their observations. The visit helped connect classroom learning with the practical realities of disaster management and demonstrated how individuals, schools, families and communities all have a role in building resilience.

GBDMA believes that disaster awareness among children and young people is a vital investment in the future. An informed child can become an ambassador of safety within the family, school and community.

Preparedness begins with awareness, building a safer and more resilient Gilgit-Baltistan together.

One week. One mission. One team.

From 21st to 28th July, the closure of the Jaglot–Skardu Road tested not only our infrastructure but also the resolve of everyone working to restore this critical lifeline.

The operation began with creating an emergency diversion at Ansar Camp after the flash floods. As conditions evolved, our collective focus shifted towards restoring permanent connectivity by installing a Bailey Bridge.

For eight consecutive days, I remained in the field from dawn until midnight, working alongside the teams of FCNA, FWO, NHA, GBDMA, the District Administration, engineers, machinery operators, and all supporting stakeholders. Every challenge was met with determination, teamwork, and a shared commitment to reopening the road as quickly and safely as possible.

No single institution could have achieved this alone. It was the spirit of teamwork, dedication, and service that made the reopening of the Jaglot–Skardu Road on 28th July possible.

My heartfelt gratitude to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, commuters, transporters, tourists, and local communities for their patience, cooperation, and trust throughout this difficult period. Your support inspired every person working on the ground.

Together, we will continue building a safer, stronger, and more resilient Gilgit-Baltistan.

It was a privilege to welcome Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, HI(M), Chairman, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), to the Headquarters of the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) in Gilgit today.

The Chairman was received by Mr. Faisal Pirzada, Home Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan, Ms. Shahana Khalil, Director General Rescue 1122 Gilgit-Baltistan, and myself, along with our respective teams.

During the visit, we presented detailed briefings on the prevailing weather situation, monsoon preparedness, emergency response arrangements, Early Warning Systems, and ongoing disaster risk reduction initiatives across Gilgit-Baltistan. We also discussed measures to further strengthen coordination and preparedness in view of the increasing impacts of climate-induced disasters.

Chairman NDMA visited the GBDMA central relief warehouses, where he appreciated the systematic management and maintenance of emergency relief stocks. We also thanked NDMA for the timely provision of additional relief items, which will significantly enhance our preparedness and response capacity throughout Gilgit-Baltistan.

The visit reflects the strong partnership between NDMA, GBDMA, Rescue 1122, and the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan in building a resilient disaster management system capable of protecting lives, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.

The visit concluded with the exchange of shields and souvenirs as a gesture of mutual respect and continued institutional collaboration.

Together, we remain committed to making Gilgit-Baltistan safer, stronger, and better prepared for future challenges.

Lasting impact is one of the greatest rewards of public service.

During my tenure as Deputy Commissioner Nagar in 2024, we installed around 200 climate friendly solar street lights along approximately 26 kilometres of the Karakoram Highway to improve road safety, facilitate tourists and night time travellers, and promote sustainable infrastructure in one of the world’s most scenic regions.

Today, after almost two and a half years, it is immensely satisfying to see these solar lights still functioning and serving thousands of commuters every day. They continue to illuminate the highway, making travel safer while contributing to environmental sustainability.

Our vision was simple: serve the people, make roads safer, support tourism, and invest in infrastructure that benefits generations to come.

I remain grateful to everyone who contributed to making this initiative a reality. Together, we can continue building a safer, greener and more prosperous Gilgit Baltistan.

“The true measure of public service is not what is inaugurated, but what continues to serve the people for years to come.”

The meeting focused on addressing operational and coordination issues, particularly those related to land acquisition, verification, and resettlement processes, and emphasized the need to further expedite the LAC related proceedings to ensure timely completion and smooth ex*****on of these nationally significant infrastructure projects.

The District Administration Diamer reiterated its commitment to facilitating all concerned stakeholders and ensuring that administrative processes are carried out in an efficient, transparent, and lawful manner.
