"Empowering Disaster Risk Management with GIS & Mapping!
Our society, Quaidian Disaster Risk Management Society in collaboration with EcoRevival Pakistan, Gym Club RWU, Law Moot Society BU, Musee Society MU, and Green Army organized a 6-Day virtual training course on Advanced GIS, Hydrology and Watershed Mapping.
Here's a sneak peek into what we learned:
◾Session 1: Introduction to GIS & Coordinate Systems
The basics of coordinate systems, latitude, longitude, and GIS tools were covered. Geodatabases, managing spatial data, and the ArcGIS interface were also explored.
◾Session 2: Working with Shapefiles & DEMs
Downloading shapefiles for regions like Punjab and Balochistan, manipulating geographic data using GIS software, creating/editing shapefiles, and working with Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) were discussed. Challenges in accessing high-resolution data were also highlighted.
◾Session 3: Watershed Delineation
Watershed delineation using tools like pour point, fill, and snap point was explored. Hands-on experience with GIS software helped understand the process better.
◾Session 4: Land Use Land Cover Mapping
Satellite data was used to analyze Land Use Land Cover patterns by downloading and mosaicking tiles. This helped understand wider concepts like urban planning and environmental monitoring.
◾Session 5: Mapping & Interpolation Techniques
Mapping and interpolation techniques for weather data, including IDW and Kriging methods, were discussed. Challenges in weather station coverage in Pakistan and how private organizations are filling the gaps were also covered.
◾Session 6: 3D Visualization on ArcScene
3D visualization on ArcScene, featuring major rivers and more, took the learning to the next level!
A huge thank you to our instructor, Zahid Masood, for his consistent efforts in making us learn GIS and Mapping concepts. He shared valuable resources, including websites for downloading satellite data, DEM data, and more. He highlighted the scope and learning opportunities in GIS, making the training a truly enriching experience!

The Earth is speaking through floods, fires, storms, droughts, and rising seas. And it’s not a warning. It’s a consequence.
Environmental disasters are no longer rare. They are the new normal in a world facing the cumulative impact of decades of neglect, pollution, and unsustainable choices.
From devastating wildfires fueled by climate change to entire communities displaced by rising oceans and plastic-choked rivers turning into death traps for marine life, the message is clear: we are out of balance.
World Environment Day 2025 is not just a symbolic date. It is a global reminder that time is running out. Ending plastic pollution is not a trend, it is a survival strategy.
If we do not act today, disaster will define tomorrow. But if we rise individually and collectivelythere is still hope. And hope demands action.
Evacuation planning for emergency preparedness. Part 1
The 4th-semester students of Environmental Sciences were assigned to create fire and earthquake evacuation plans for NCB and Medical School buildings for the Disaster Risk Management course.
Four groups developed comprehensive plans, identifying emergency exits, safe routes, and more. Their presentations and documentaries showcased their hard work and dedication.
We're proud of their contributions and commitment to disaster preparedness! Each student received a certificate for their outstanding work.
The Quaidian Disaster Risk Management Society successfully organized a Rescue 1122 Training Workshop for students, aimed at equipping them with essential life-saving skills and emergency response techniques. This event was held with the support of trained professionals from Rescue 1122 and was attended by enthusiastic Quaidians from various departments.
The workshop began with a brief yet informative introduction to CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), followed by hands-on CPR training where students practiced the technique on stage using mannequins. The session then covered other critical first aid measures, including bleeding control, fracture management, and emergency response procedures. Participants were also taught how to use a fire extinguisher and safely evacuate a patient from a fire-affected area.
The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session and the distribution of certificates to both the organizing cabinet members and the participants. The workshop proved to be an insightful and empowering experience for all attendees.
Thank you to everyone involved, including the trainers, organizers, and participants, for making this event a success

On March 26, 2024, our society hosted a webinar on "Interventions and Rehabilitation Strategies: Post PTSD Diagnosis and Crisis Management."
We were honored to have Miss Adeena Arzoo, an accomplished clinical psychologist, share her knowledge and expertise with us.
The session left us with three important takeaways: PTSD can affect anyone after a traumatic event, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for recovery, and there are many effective treatment approaches available. Additionally, medications, mindfulness techniques, support groups, and self-care activities can help improve overall well-being.
By understanding PTSD better, we can work towards creating a supportive environment for those affected, promoting early intervention, and developing a culture of mental health awareness.
A huge thank you to our attendees for your active participation and thoughtful questions.
Stay tuned with our social media channels for more such webinars and resources.
