PH EMBASSY JOINS CELEBRATION OF “SONGKRAN” (THAI NEW YEAR) FESTIVAL

Islamabad, 25 April 2026 — Philippine Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, together with his spouse, Mme. Alicia Kalaw-Fernandez, participated in the celebration of the Thai New Year, or “Songkran,” held today at the Embassy of Thailand in Islamabad. The Ambassador and his spouse were joined by other members of the Philippine Embassy staff. The event was graciously hosted by the Thai Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Virabutr Rongvudhi.

“Songkran,” one of Thailand’s most important and widely celebrated festivals, marks the traditional Thai New Year. Rooted in ancient customs and influenced by Buddhist traditions, the festival symbolizes renewal, purification, and the welcoming of good fortune. Water plays a central role in the celebration, representing the washing away of misfortune and the ushering in of a fresh beginning.

During the event, Ambassador Fernandez joined fellow ASEAN Ambassadors in the traditional water blessing ceremony. In this ritual, participants gently pour scented water over the hands or shoulders of one another as a gesture of respect, goodwill, and blessing for the year ahead. The ceremony reflects the deeper cultural and spiritual meaning of Songkran beyond its festive and playful aspects.

The celebration was attended by the Ambassadors and staff of ASEAN embassies in Pakistan, who took part in various water-related activities and games that are characteristic of Songkran festivities.

Guests were also treated to a sumptuous buffet featuring authentic Thai cuisine, adding to the vibrant and convivial atmosphere of the gathering.

Events such as this highlight the richness and diversity of ASEAN cultures while strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation among ASEAN countries, including the Philippines.

PH AMBASSADOR ATTENDS ANZAC DAWN SERVICE IN ISLAMABAD

Islamabad, 25 April 2026 — Philippine Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, accompanied by his wife, Mme. Alicia Kalaw-Fernandez, attended the ANZAC Day Dawn Service hosted by the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Timothy Kane, at the Australian High Commission in Islamabad.

ANZAC Day, observed annually on 25 April in Australia and New Zealand, commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli in 1915 during the First World War. The day honors the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of servicemen and women who have served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.

The solemn dawn service paid tribute to the ANZAC spirit of bravery, mateship, and resilience, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps, defense officials, and community representatives.

Following the ceremony, guests partook in the traditional “Gunfire Breakfast,” a customary ANZAC observance believed to have originated among soldiers who would take a simple early morning meal—often accompanied by tea laced with rum—before heading into battle. Today, it serves as a symbolic act of remembrance of the ANZAC landings.

Ambassador Fernandez’s attendance underscores the Philippines’ strong and enduring diplomatic relations with Australia, reflecting shared values of remembrance, partnership, and mutual respect.
