Dear NGIs Network members,

This is to share with you all with a heavy heart about the sad demise of Dr. Anwar Nasim who left for his eternal journey on September 1, 2024, in Toronto, Canada, with peace of mind. إِنَّا ِلِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ . May Allah grant him maghfirat and a place in Jannah. Please join us to pay him homage with special prayers keeping in view what he has been doing in service to humanity.

Born on December 7, 1935, Dr. Sahab was a national and international legend in science, literary arts, and Management Sciences. His sincere services to the country and global community will be long remembered. He was also the proponent of the NGIs concept, and we recall his contributions, which are fast multiplying with scalable impacts in service to the people and the planet.

Profile of Dr. Anwar Nasim:

Dr Anwar Nasim's distinguished career spanned several decades and continents, with positions including President of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (2015-2017), Secretary General of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (2013-2014), Advisor for Science at the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Standing Committee on Scientific & Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) Islamabad (1996-2011), and Executive Secretary of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, Islamabad (1994-1996). He served as an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Ottawa (1983-1989), and the Department of Biology, Carleton University, Ottawa (1984-1989).

His international contributions included serving as Principal Scientist and Head of the Molecular Genetics Group at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1989-1993), and as a Visiting Scientist at the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen, Germany, and Stanford University, USA (1978-1979). Earlier in his career, he held roles as a Senior Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada (1973-1989) and Research Officer at the Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd, Chalk River (1966-1973). He began his career as a Lecturer in Botany with the Education Department of West Pakistan (1957-1962).

Throughout his illustrious career, he was recognized with numerous awards, including the Pride of Performance in Molecular Genetics (Govt. of Pakistan, 1995) and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Govt. of Pakistan, 1999). He was a Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Medical Sciences (2000), the Islamic Academy of Sciences (1998), and The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS, 1987). His memberships included the Human Genome Organization (HUGO, 1994), and he served on multiple international editorial boards, contributing significantly to the field of Molecular Genetics, Environmental Mutagenesis, Biotechnology, and Bioethics.
His funeral will take place tomorrow. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of scientists and researchers.

Thank you for extending your greetings and best wishes. Today, as I celebrate my birthday, I want to take a moment to reflect on the ongoing conflict in Gaza and dedicate this day to the victims of war where more than 30,000 men, women, and children have been killed, injured, or displaced in violation of the international law.

Despite numerous calls by world humanitarian organizations such as UN agencies, Amnesty International, Transparency International, as well as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and several governments, the war on Gaza continues without regard for morality, ethics, and justice. The International Court of Justice issued interim measures aimed at preventing Israel from committing acts in Gaza that fall within the scope of the Genocide Convention, such as killing members of the targeted group and deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction. However, the violence and suffering in Gaza persist, with a significant number of casualties, including children and women.

The ICJ ruling highlights the legal obligation of all states party to the Genocide Convention to take material steps to put an end to Israel's genocidal acts in Gaza. Despite these calls for action, Israel continues to disregard its obligation to ensure the basic needs of Palestinians in Gaza are met. The ongoing conflict and disregard for international humanitarian law create chaos and hinder the distribution of humanitarian aid. The situation in Gaza is a grave humanitarian crisis that requires urgent attention and resolution.

The ongoing situation in Gaza has deeply moved me, and I believe it is important to raise awareness and show support for those who have suffered as a result of the conflict. This birthday, I want to use my platform to shed light on their struggles and offer my solidarity.

The impact of war on civilian lives is devastating, and we must come together to support the people of Gaza. I encourage all of you to take a moment to educate yourselves about the situation, to learn about the humanitarian organizations working tirelessly to provide aid, and to consider making a donation to support their efforts. I also want to honor the memory of Palestinian journalists who have been killed or injured while covering the conflict, such as Muhammad Al-Jaja, Majd Fadl Arandas, Motaz Azaiza, Younis Tirawi, Hind Khoudary and Iyad Matar. Their work is crucial in shedding light on the experiences of civilians who are affected by the conflict and their dedication to telling the truth about the situation in Gaza is an inspiration to us all.

Let us stand together for peace, justice, and humanity. Together, we can make a difference. .
