New Cement Turns Heat Into Electricity, Could Help Buildings Generate Their Own Power
Researchers at Southeast University in China, led by Professor Zhou Yang, have developed a bio-inspired cement-hydrogel composite that converts heat into electricity, with a Seebeck coefficient of −40.5 mV/K—ten times higher than previous cement-based thermoelectric materials.
Inspired by plant stem structures, the material alternates cement and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel layers to enhance ion mobility, enabling it to generate and store electricity.
This breakthrough could allow smart infrastructure like buildings and bridges to power sensors and communication systems independently, promoting sustainable construction.
The research, published in Science Bulletin, will be highlighted at the SynBioBeta conference for its potential to reduce concrete-related carbon emissions.
