11 years ago on this day, Sri Lanka suffered another heartbreaking World Cup final loss. After losing back-to-back ODI world cup finals in 2007 and 2011, in addition to the 2009 T20 world cup final, Sri Lanka went on to lose the 2012 T20 world cup final at R. Premadasa Stadium. Personally, the worst part was being on the ground with all the expectations and seeing it all get taken away within a couple of hours.
From a score of 14/2 after the power play, the West Indies went on to score 137/6 with a Marlon Samuels World Cup special. The sounds of some of the sixes he hit off Malinga still echo in my ears. Then the sound of the ball hitting the stumps, which ended Dilshan's innings, crowed, going to absolute silence, is still in the memory.
After the dismissal of Sanga, the Sri Lankan innings went downhill pretty quickly, and for the first time in history, the West Indies went on to clinch the ICC World T20 title. Their iconic gangnam-style celebrations in front of a packed Sri Lankan crowd will always be remembered.
