Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing noncommunicable diseases globally, with over 830 million people affected — and nearly half remaining undiagnosed . The burden is particularly severe in low- and middle-income countries, where access to timely diagnosis and care remains limited.
The report by World Health Organization highlights critical insights:
🧬 1 in 6 pregnancies (21 million births annually) is affected by diabetes
🧬 Diabetes during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of pre-eclampsia, stillbirth, birth complications, and long-term health issues for both mother and child
🧬 Children born to affected pregnancies face higher risks of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes later in life
🧬 The burden is highest in low- and middle-income countries, where access to specialized care remains limited
🧬 Early detection is essential, as delayed diagnosis leads to severe complications and long-term health risks
🧬 Diabetes significantly increases the risk of life-threatening conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, organ damage, and complications during pregnancy
