A meeting of the Sub-Committee on Country Engagement Working Group (CEWG) was convened to deliberate on matters related to the strengthening and restructuring of the Country Engagement Working Group. The session focused on reviewing existing coordination mechanisms, identifying key areas for improvement, and discussing strategic measures to enhance collaboration and effectiveness of the working group.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Aneela Mahfooz Durrani, Secretary Population Welfare Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, along with other relevant stakeholders and members of the sub-committee. During the meeting, participants shared their insights and recommendations aimed at improving institutional coordination and ensuring more effective engagement at the country level.

The discussions concluded with a commitment from all participants to continue collaborative efforts toward strengthening the framework and operational structure of the Country Engagement Working Group (CEWG) to better achieve its objectives

Dr. Aneela Mahfooz Durrani, Secretary PWD KP visited the Training of Trainers (ToT) on DMPA-SC Self-Injection, jointly organized by PSI and RIZ Consulting. During her visit, she observed the training proceedings, interacted with facilitators and participants, and appreciated the structured approach adopted for capacity building of service providers.
In her remarks, the Secretary Population Welfare Department highlighted that DMPA-SC Self-Injection is a transformative addition to the family planning method mix, particularly for improving women’s autonomy, privacy, and convenience. She emphasized that self-injection can significantly enhance continuation rates, reduce unnecessary visits to health facilities, and expand access to contraception, especially in hard-to-reach and underserved communities. She commended PSI and RIZ Consulting for their efforts in promoting evidence-based, client-centered innovations and stressed the importance of quality training to ensure safe, confident, and correct use of DMPA-SC at the community level.

The Population Program Wing, Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination, convened meetings of the Sub-Groups of the Country Engagement Working Group (CEWG) on 8 December 2025, followed by the 39th Meeting of the CEWG on 9 December 2025 in Lahore.

These meetings were organized with the support of UNFPA and in close coordination with the Health and Population Department, Government of Punjab. The sessions brought together representatives from Provincial and Regional Population Welfare Departments, Departments of Health, UNFPA, FP2030, Pathfinder, Jhpiego, RIZ Consulting, and other key development partners. Secretary, Population Welfare Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Dr. Aneela Mahfooz Durrani, also attended the meetings.

The forum provided an opportunity to comprehensively review progress on the implementation of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) Recommendations and the National Action Plan on Population. Key deliberations focused on contraceptive commodity security, updates on federal and provincial procurement, communication and media interventions, and progress on Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) strategies. Technical briefings were also delivered on data reporting mechanisms, including updates on the CCI Web Portal and the Commodity Logistics Management Information System (cLMIS).

The meetings further highlighted important programmatic developments, including debriefings on international best practices shared during the 7th International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) held in Bogotá, as well as presentations on the Draft National SBCC Campaign and SBCC Strategic Guidelines.

The Ministry acknowledges and deeply appreciates the active engagement, valuable contributions, and collaborative efforts of federal, provincial, regional, and development partners. Their continued support remains critical to strengthening national coordination mechanisms and advancing Pakistan’s family planning and reproductive health agenda.

The Population Welfare Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is pleased to share that Secretary Dr. Aneela Mahfooz Durrani has been formally requested to participate as a panelist at “The Pakistan Population Summit 2025”, scheduled to be held on 1st December 2025 at Serena Hotel, Islamabad. She spoke in the session titled “A Heightened Responsibility to Restore the Balance: Coordination Between the Center and the Provinces.”

During her remarks, Secretary Dr. Aneela Mahfooz Durrani highlighted the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s strong commitment to address the pressing population challenge. She stated that the department is working with full dedication to promote responsible population management across the province.

She added that 260 Population Welfare Centres have been established across settled districts, along with 120 centres in the merged districts, to ensure wider access to family planning services, counselling, and awareness. These efforts reflect the department’s determination to strengthen service delivery and support communities in making informed decisions for a sustainable future.

The Secretary reaffirmed that she, along with her entire team, remains fully committed to advancing population welfare initiatives and contributing to a coordinated national approach for balancing population growth and resources.

A follow-up meeting was held today in continuation of the decisions taken during the earlier meeting at the Secretary’s Office. Secretary Population, Dr. Aneela Mahfooz Durrani, chaired the session. During the meeting, comprehensive briefings were presented to the Secretary regarding the progress, pending tasks, and actions taken by the concerned sections.

After reviewing the updates, the Secretary issued further instructions to ensure timely completion of all assigned tasks and emphasized the need for improved coordination among the relevant units.

The meeting was attended by Additional Secretary Mr. Abdullah; SO Budget Muhammad Ali, Director PME, Mr. Imran Shah; Director Technical, Dr. Nargis; Director A&P, Mr. Ikram Ullah; and Deputy Director, Ms. Kosar jabeen.
