Discover the snails of the LIFE SNAILS project at the project’s Final Conference

Why is it important to protect land snails?

Did you know that species such as 𝘓𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘳, 𝘖𝘹𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘩𝘰𝘪 and 𝘈𝘻𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘢 are found only on the island of Santa Maria?

Despite their small size, these molluscs play an important role in ecosystems:
🌱 They help recycle nutrients
🌱 They help break down organic matter
🌱 They form part of the Azores’ unique biodiversity

Protecting these species also means conserving the natural habitats they depend on and preserving the unique natural heritage of the island of Santa Maria.

Come learn more about these species and the work underway to conserve them at the Final Conference of the LIFE SNAILS project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action.

Maintenance work in areas intervened on by the LIFE SNAILS project continues on the ground, carried out by the team from the Santa Maria Environment and Climate Action Service.

These tasks are demanding, as they are mostly carried out manually and often in steep, hard-to-reach areas. They are particularly important during summer, when invasive alien species regenerate more rapidly and seed production and dispersal intensify.

Regular maintenance of the treated areas is essential to control the growth of invasive vegetation, preserve the results already achieved and ensure the continuity of the conservation actions carried out by the project.
