The weekend was full of fragrance as we distilled essential oils of Rosemary, fennel, eucalyptus, helichrysum, and the enigmatic inula viscosa that I am studying for her insect repellant properties.
We were joined by Rita Ribeiro and her alembic and our experimentations will continue next month..Such fun, new friends, some incredible improvisation and great food from Marine.

This time of the year there is a lot to process in the garden so I harvest just a little each day. The quinces are huge and golden and I have a delicious recipie with red w**e and spices. Meanwhile those cheeky olives are early to the party and the trees are laden. Luckily we have help arriving soon. One space left if you'd like to learn how to distill essential oils from local plants 10th /11th October.

Looking forward to seeing some of you there.Message for more details and exact location.Até já

This week in the garden: Some of you may know that while I was living in France I used to distill essential oils on a smale scale to sell and incorporate into traditional remedies. My 'still' or alembic was mislaid during my move to Portugal and I have never replaced it. Now, 7 years later, one of my students is buying a small copper alembic and has asked me to teach her how to use it. My enthusiasm for this ancient practice has been re-ignited and I am happy to announce that on October 10th and 11th I will be sharing what I know with a small group of would-be alchemists..
SATURDAY theory' including : History, botany, biochemistry and some facts and figures. Followed by a little venture into the mystic realms.
SUNDAY practice: Hands on distillation of Helichrysum italicum and one other if we have time or someone with another alembic. We will also talk about plant ethics and the uses of aromatherapy.
Please let me know if you are interested in this weekend initiation. 4 people maximum. Vegetarian lunches provided and supper if you decide to stay over.
Message the garden for more info and to reserve a place.

Sunday's walk in the Mata das Maestres 20 mins from Caldas, was a breath of fresh air. We only went a small way but came across a large variety of interesting plants. Biodiversity I rarely see in these parts.
Another walk planned in October.

Vinegar, 'Vin aigre' or sour w**e. Has been used for 1000's of years. It's simple to make from your windfalls and can be used for so many things. Vinegar extracts vitamins and minerals from herbs which would be denatured by alcohol. I like to make a Vinegar with the young leaves of Artemisia vulgaris and a cleaning spray for my counter top with vinegar and lavander.
We had fun in the garden yesterday with this group, making pear and peach vinegar which will be ready in 4 weeks or so to make traditional "Fire c***r"
