Gary Portelli is banking on a patient ride helping Kintyre return to his best in the Festival Stakes.
A recent barrier trial hitout has confirmed Gary Portelli's suspicions that Kintyre is better ridden quietly, and he plans to revert to that pattern for the horse's next assignment.
While the gelding collected the Frank Packer Plate (2000m) and Queensland Guineas (1600m) as a three-year-old when racing on the speed, earlier in his career he came from off the pace.
With the four-year-old mixing his form this preparation, Portelli opted to take him back to the trials and allow him to find his feet and finish off.
Kintyre did just that in a recent 1200m hitout at Warwick Farm, convincing connections to take a similar approach to his next start in the Group 3 Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
"We have been riding him upside down," Portelli said.
"I had him ridden quietly in the trial the other day and he absolutely charged through the line, so we will ride him quietly in the Festival.
"He is tough enough and he races well wherever he goes. Given an even opportunity, he will be a good chance.
"He's been going well at home and his trial was really good."
A half-brother to Portelli's 2022 Golden Slipper winner Fireburn, Kintyre hasn't been far away in several strong races this spring, resuming with a solid fifth to Royal Patronage in the Tramway Stakes (1400m) and finishing fourth in the Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m).
He performed below par when down the track last start in the Golden Eagle (1500m) but has been given the trial and almost a month between runs to help him bounce back.
If he can rebound, Portelli plans to aim him towards next month's Group 2 The Ingham (1600m) at Randwick for which the Festival Stakes is a traditional lead-up.
Stablemate Encap may also head toward The Ingham following his fifth placing in The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange on Saturday.

R***e annihilated his rivals to win first-up in the Class 3 โ 1300m handicap to give former Macau trainer Ricky Choi his second winner in as many meeting on the scene in Malaysia.
And what a performance it was from the former Australia and Macau winner.
First to break, R***e led early but jockey Winston Cheah allowed a very eager Majestic Way to take the initiative approaching the 1000m and settled second on the rails.
But R***e was travelling so well that he ranged alongside Majestic Way effortlessly making the turn into the straight without being extended.
The Delago Deluxe gelding broke clear of Majestic Way at the 400m and went further and further ahead in the run home to win by 8-1/4 lengths.
Peaky Blinder (three wins in five runs), having his first start outside of Ipoh, finished second with Lim's Craft in third place.
R***e won twice over 1400m (at Murray Bridge and Mildura) in nine runs in Australia.
Shipped to Macau and trained by Choi, R***e won first-up in a 1050m sprint on the sand track, then found one to beat four times in 13 subsequent starts before coming to Malaysia.
"I was surprised by manner he won and the winning margin," said Choi.
"After winning first-up in Macau, he (R***e) contested the Macau Derby (1800m) in his next start but the trip was beyond him. He wasn't quite right after that although he did finish second four times.
(R***e finished eighth in the Derby behind Master Hunter, now renamed Mega Gems in Malaysia.)
"But the horse has freshened up considerably since coming to Malaysia but still I did not expect him to win like he did."
"He (R***e) is a very nice horse," said Cheah.
"After I rode him for the first time (at track work), I told trainer Ricky (Choi) that he is a lovely horse and I hope I can win on him one day.
"When I got the ride on Monday, I told myself this will probably be my first winner back from suspension."

Globe has made a return to winning form taking out the Cranbourne Cup.
A trip to the Cranbourne racecourse for a midweek track gallop has proven instrumental in Globe taking out the Listed Cranbourne Cup on Saturday.
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper is prepared at the Cranbourne Training Centre, but the track was opened for pre-raceday gallops ahead of Saturday's meeting.
It was a masterstroke by the pair who engaged in-form rider Ethan Brown to partner the huge galloper in the workout on Tuesday and Saturday's 1600m contest.
Taken straight to the front by Brown, the $4.40 favourite held on to land a long-head win from Air Assault ($5) with Dashing ($26) a length away third.
"I think bringing him here on Tuesday was a good idea because he is a high nervous energy horse and he did belt out a bit of energy on Tuesday morning," Price said.
"Ethan did a good job on him. I know it's hot, but it's not hot where the horses are.
"I thought the kid did a good job with him out the back and they hosed him and kept him cool.
"The horse was in good nervous order. His wheels weren't fizzing around his head, which they can, and I think the more racing he does, the better he'll be."
The victory aboard Globe completed a big afternoon for Brown who earlier in the day took out the inaugural running of The Meteorite aboard the Ciaron Maher-trained Nadal.
Brown partnered Globe in his galloper during the week and made the observation he thought the gelding had improved from his second-place finish in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
"It was a hot day, which could have easily brought him undone, but he was in the right hands, and he kept his cool," Brown said.
"We established such a beautiful lead. He pricked his ears and I knew I was on a fit horse to up the tempo a long way out and try and break them.
"That's what happened, and he'll improve again out of this run.
"I'm confident he'll get back to where they thought he was heading before he got injured."
Globe won his first four starts before suffering heart fibrillation when favourite and finishing last in the Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley in September last year.
He then suffered a shoulder injury in one appearance during the autumn but has returned this campaign in excellent form.
Price said he was likely to restrict Globe's racing over the summer months and potentially look to a big autumn prize, on a bigger track than Cranbourne.
Brown said Globe got around the tight Cranbourne circuit as he was not pressure early.
"If he had got pressured, he may have been brought undone," Brown said.
"But that's why we rode him forward to establish a lead, get him happy and get him going."

Caulfield Cup winner headlines Halo Racing reduction sale.
A share in last month's Caulfield Cup winner Duke De Sessa is being offered on Inglis Digital.
The five percent share is one of the headline lots that form a Halo Racing unreserved reduction, offered on behalf of the late Colin McKenna, who died last month.
Also up for grabs is five percent in Group 1 Toorak Handicap winner Attrition and five percent in last-start Flemington winner Light Infantry Man, who is favourite for Saturday's Group 1 Railway Stakes in Perth.
All up, shares in 41 horses are being offered in the Inglis Digital sale, which is now active with finals bids commencing from 10am Wednesday.
There is also 10 percent in Federer, 17.5 percent in Chorlton Lane, five percent in each of Future History and Interpretation, 30 percent of Makram and 10 percent in Sunshineinmypocket.
The undefeated Perfect Excuse and dual winner Half Yours will also be offered wholly.
"Colin McKenna, with his wife Janice, was an incredible patron of racingโฆthe blue and green silks of Halo Racing are synonymous with top-class horses through the likes of Jameka, Gregers, Another Wil, Attrition (pictured) and many others and no doubt will continue to be,'' Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch said.
"Halo Racing is a very significant owner both in terms of scale and quality, so the reduction sale, following the sad passing of the much-missed Colin, is a pragmatic step to manage stock numbers.
"There are a number of hugely desirable lots amongst the group and I'm sure the opportunity to invest in such stock will be greeted enthusiastically by buyers.''
Among the others being offered in the 393-lot sale are Our Belisa, the dam of this month's $1m Inglis Golden Gift winner North England, who is being offered in-foal to Stay Inside.
Snitzel Blitz, the dam of Group 1 Memsie Stakes winner Pinstriped, is also being offered, carrying a foal by Tassort.

Igotcha will attempt to follow the victory of stablemate Jimmysstar when she heads to the Shooting Stars at Cranbourne.
The Ciaron Maher stable will be out to capture another Shooting Stars success at Cranbourne, this time with an up-and-coming mare.
On the Cranbourne Cup program 12 months ago, Jimmysstar announced his arrival with an explosive victory coming off a success at Bendigo.
The Shooting Stars (1500m) on Saturday will see Igotcha line up for the Maher stable with the lightly raced five-year-old heading to the races for only the tenth time.
Maher's assistant-trainer Jack Turnbull said Saturday's race was a nice option for the mare over a suitable journey and for good prize money.
"She keeps improving but we've had to space her runs just due to her weight," Turnbull said.
"She's always been a bit strung out and hollow looking but (owner) Gerry Ryan has been very good, giving us whatever time that she has needed.
"She's down at the beach and doesn't do a lot of galloping, instead more slower, longer work."
Igotcha has won three of her nine starts to date, putting back-to-back victories together at Mornington and Moe before running a last start second over 1600m at Moonee Valley earlier in the month.
Saturday's race carries $150,000 in prize money at Class 3 level.
"It profiles as the right race for her being restricted class and for good prize money, it's a good option," Turnbull said.
"It's a rich race and Jimmysstar ran and won it 12 months ago."
Jimmysstar has gone on to win a further three races since last year's success, graduating to Group 1 level at his most recent appearance in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield on November 16.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable will have Robrick, Moby Dick and Kristilli representing the stable in the inaugural running of The Meteorite.
Michael Kent Jnr has been busy fulfilling his training role with Mick Price while also acting as an ambassador for the Southside Racing Carnival.
The Southside Racing Carnival kicks off on Saturday at Cranbourne while the second day of the Carnival will be at Pakenham on December 21.
A new $1 million slot race โ The Meteorite โ over 1200m runs in conjunction with the Listed Cranbourne Cup (1600m) on Saturday.
Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr hold a strong hand in the 14-horse The Meteorite with three runners โ all draw nicely according to Kent Jnr in barriers five six and seven.
Kristilli drew best in five with Robrick out in barrier seven while Moby Dick has the gate between that pair.
"They are beautiful draws for all three," Kent Jnr said.
"It really gives them every possible chance. There's good speed drawn out wide, especially for Moby Dick and Robrick as they will appreciate the pace being on."
A first-up winner at Flemington in September, defeating two of Saturday's main rivals Baraqiel and Nadal, Moby Dick enters The Meteorite coming off luckless efforts.
"He got held up badly at Geelong and nothing went right at Flemington last start when beaten less than three lengths," Kent Jnr said.
"It was a bit of a bit of a train wreck, but he's always had a bit of x-factor.
"He's got a very good turn of foot, and we think the race will suit him because there'll be pace on, and back around the bend and when the pace is on, he just drops the bridle that little bit better, which means he means he has a better finish."
A former member of the Annabel Neasham yard, Kristilli is having her first outing for Price and Kent Jnr and has been described by Kent Jnr as a gorgeous mare.
"She's going to have the most improvement of any runner in the field," Kent Jnr said.
"She's first-up in what will be a high-pressure race. She's had two trials. They've been okay without being sensational.
"We've taken the view that we're going into the race to present a happy sound mare and if she brings her absolute best form, then she can run well."
Robrick enters Saturday's race having had two runs under the belt.
The concern Kent Jnr holds is Robrick may now be looking for further.
"First-up he was very good from well back at Geelong then he just got beaten by Rey Magnerio at Flemington," Kent Jnr said.
"He's now third up, but the only trick with him is trying to keep him fresh for 1200 (metres) third-up.
"He's possibly looking for a touch further, so we've done nothing with him, but a high pressure 1200 will suit that horse and he's been very consistent all preparation.
"I expect him to hit the line strongly and hopefully he's sharp enough."
