Rolypoly Family Dance, play, body safety! Our lessons and projects are age-appropriate, context-informed and culturally-aware. Rolypoly Family is a division of Derring-Do Dance.

Rolypoly Family is dedicated to honouring childrenโ€™s creative genius while supporting the artistic and socio-emotional learning of diverse young children, their families and their communities. Led by dance artists Bernice Lee and Faye Lim, we produce delightful dance experiences, such as performances, interdisciplinary projects, workshops and classes, from our artistsโ€™ intuitive choreographic and movement practices. Our Body Smarts Through Movement Arts programme teaches body safety and sexuality education topics to diverse communities, using a multi-modal approach that includes movement, art, craft and discussion. We also provide training & consulting for artists, educators and organisations who want to build healthier, safer and/or more creative spaces for diverse children. Our workshops and consulting services can help expand capacities, bridge gaps or tackle specific problems in your projects, communities or workplaces. Our name is a statement of our beliefs โ€“ that families come in all shapes and sizes, that kinship can grow through creative and physical play (yes, rolling!), and that rhyming is as fun in language as in dance. We partner with groups and organisations across Singapore, such as community groups, social service organisations, arts groups and institutions, and government agencies. Dance of the Dreamers was an interactive performance we created for ACM, during which:

๐ŸชฉA HUGE group of families danced safely and joyfully together
๐ŸคซSuper excited children performed 3 seconds of collective silence
๐ŸŒˆA child connected numeracy and philosophy - we were 126 people, dancing as one!

We had a lovely time together, and look forward to creating more magical communal experiences for children and families in the years to come. In this era, we're finding that dancing together - sharing time and energy and presence - are ever more precious and essential โœจ

Dance of the Dreamers was inspired by:
๐Ÿ”Ž an artefact at ACM - this rare Malay manuscript, a handwritten manual in Jawi about dream interpretation: https://www.roots.gov.sg/Collection-Landing/listing/1131997
โ˜๏ธ a bedsheet
๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ years of performing and facilitating dance workshops/jams!

Happy 61st Birthday, Singapore! ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

For the second year, we celebrated National Day with the Rainbow Dancemakers CCA group and Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive school. The CCA group and the guest dancers did so well performing to their adoring and supportive school community! A past student joined them onstage and other CCA alumni joined in from the floor.

Weโ€™re proud to play our part as artists in building a more inclusive nation, through partnerships with families, schools and communities that understand what it takes to foster strong social bonds and create caring cultures. โœจ

In the years to come, we hope to see greater strides in our country to protect what matters most - our shared humanity on our shared planet. ๐ŸŒŽ

This past year, weโ€™ve had the joy of witnessing and facilitating creations by young choreographers. Here's what some of them and their loved ones had to say about their experiences, in the company of Light Years Choreographers! ๐Ÿซถ

We are very proud of them and the new, original dance works they have made. ๐Ÿฅณ

Itโ€™s a wrap for Light Years Choreographers! ๐Ÿ’ซ

From last November, we ran a series of creative dance camps which culminated in a choreographersโ€™ showcase this June. We're incredibly proud of the young choreographers for their confidence, creative energies and collaborative spirits. ๐Ÿ‘

Here are some highlights from our latest camp, made possible by the team working tirelessly and mindfully behind the scenes, the artists and venues we got to visit, and of course, all the young choreographers, their families and communities who showed up with so much love and support ๐Ÿฅณ

A big thank you from all of us at Rolypoly Family, and we hope to share more dances and art-making fun at our next edition of Light Years! ๐Ÿคธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Maintaining safety is a constant effort. The work of building, rebuilding and maintaining safety/harm reduction through our interactions with children and families through our teaching practices is particularly important to us at Rolypoly Family.

A throwback to a year ago! A little chat with Faye and Bernice about how Motherhood shapes and influences their work. In this reel, Bernice talks about her shifting perspectives on safety for children.

Stay tuned for Part 3 to hear Faye elaborate more on how she thinks about navigating safe spaces for children!
