SIT Saving FAUNA

Saving Fauna is an initiative that hopes to inspire SIT students to extend a helping hand towards bettering the welfare of animals here in Singapore.

This club is founded upon the interest and love for both domesticated and wild animals. ‘Love’ is a common word in human relations, however the connection between humans and animals could not be discounted. SIT Saving Fauna (SSF)’s sole purpose is to rally animal lovers within Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) to actively participate in events involving wildlife conservation, local campaigns

(e.g. adoption drive), as well as fostering awareness on various contemporary animal issues (e.g. illegal animal trade, animal abuse). Education is an important institution in growing one’s knowledge and leadership. However, it is also crucial in growing an individual’s interest and passion. Through SSF, we hope to proactively engage more students to love and care for animals, an area that is often neglected. Domesticated animals are prone to euthanasia when housing capacity of shelter runs low. Largely attributed to the preference of humans’ for animals that is built upon the negative perception that the senior counterparts are not able to love. In addition to the existing misconceptions that age matters, those with black fur are commonly labeled as inauspicious. Socially constructed ideas categorize animals that not only affect humans’ preference, but also contribute to the usage of such malicious acts. Faunas living in the wild are facing the risk of extinction due to the human activities. Not only were their habitats destroyed, their body parts (i.e. skins, horns) were commodified as luxurious goods. Going against illegal trade and mass exploitation of humans are just helpless wildlife. Therefore, every initiative, be it a small or massive, would invariably save a life. Saving lives – is all that matter. We may not be able to make a difference for the whole ecosystem, but we sure will do our best in making a difference for that one life. In Singapore, organizations that aim to serve the animal community are generally functioning individually. In the hope that organizations could foster better connection and forming partnerships, the club intends to seek collaboration among those organizations. Club participants will be able to gain exposure and establish a greater degree of social, and cultural capital, towards to love for animals.

This morning, we invited Edwina and Anbu from ACRES to hold a webinar on the topic of ‘How to live a cruelty-free lifestyle through your various daily choices: food, fashion, pets, tourism.

We were shared on how choosing plant-based diet can end the cruelty of animal farming of pigs and chickens. There are other alternatives to leather ingredients (made from snakes, crocodile and monitor lizards) such as pineapple and mushroom. Puppies sold in pet shops are force-bred in puppy mills unethically.

“Animals kept in captivity do not have their natural habitat to express their natural behaviour. Just like how we have to stay at home during the circuit breaker, were we happy about it?”

Anbu also gave us a virtual tour around ACRES and shared with us how they function. She showed us what equipment does the recue van has in order to rescue wildlife animals, how they are rehabilitating the rescued animals, and also what plans they have for the animals once they are back to a healthy state.

Bark-a-tree is looking for 3-5 volunteers to help out with the Petsploration event. It's an with adoption drives and many other activities to raise funds for animal welfare shelters!
