A memoir of this wooden plank corrugated-iron roofed house (where Kampong Bedok Laut was) - we lived here from 1954 until the last of us moved out in Oct 1974 - sharing old documents, photos, and lives lived here and from here. This house was built on Lot 143-25 Mukim 27, Bedok in Singapore (opposite the Bedok corner food centre, just behind the old Bedok Rest house and the entire area has since
been redeveloped to the now existing Eastwood Road residences. This plank and zinc roofed house was built in October 1949, purchased by my grandparents in February 1953, they along with my father and siblings moved in in December 1954. This house was like a beach resort with the coastline right up to where the breakwater wall meets the garden but sadly faced reclamation in the early 1960's. This house holds many memories for me, born in July 1961, my families, cousins and other relatives who all lived here. Eventually family members began to pass on, families began moving out and we finally sold the house and moved out in October 1974 into a HDB (Housing & Development Board) flat in Marine Parade. The passing of our father, the eldest son of our grandparents last June 2023 at age 93 led to house clearing that unearthed many treasures which I believed need to be shared as a heritage from our families to you and yours. Our nation was built by and upon individuals and families who collectively shared in the inheritance and nation-building our forefathers pursued in this land of Singapore.
