At various times this year, I have spoken about our urgent need to recruit more local bus captains, so that we can add more bus services and improve our bus frequencies.
The median age of local bus drivers is 56, with many due to retire in the coming years. But even just to sustain the current levels of service, we will need to recruit many more new drivers.
This is why from January 2027, we will increase starting salaries and sign-on bonuses to attract more locals to join the profession.
A larger pool of bus captains will also allow us to improve working conditions, including shift arrangements, and make bus driving a more sustainable career.
As we work to expand and improve bus services, we must also support the people who keep them running. This reflects our commitment to take care of our public transport workers, so they can continue serving our commuters well.

9% of weekday morning peak hour commuters on the North East Line have shifted off-peak since we introduced free off-peak rail travel in December. This is a win-win outcome, with less crowded trains during peak hour and all commuters travelling for free during the shoulder peaks.

Spent a fun Sunday morning with Theodora Lai and her grassroots team in Sengkang North 🌅
I met many warm and friendly Sengkang residents 🥰 Many appreciate the effort the government has put in on various fronts to improve their lives, including on transport (of course!) but also many local improvements by Theodora and her team.
Thanks for the warm welcome and hope to be back again soon.

The improvements in overall MRT reliability in the latest rail reliability report reflect the steady effort and commitment of our rail engineers, technicians, frontline staff and operations teams.
Thank you for the work you do every day to keep our rail network safe and reliable for commuters.
Still more to do, and we'll keep at it. But this progress is worth celebrating. 🙏
