What Most People Don't See Behind Save Sambar Deer.

When people see a photograph of a sambar deer we have posted, they often think it's simply a matter of walking into the forest and taking a picture or may even assume that we are disturbing the deer.

The reality is very different.

Every sighting is backed by hours and often days of preparation, fieldwork, and research. Our team studies maps, prepares equipment, surveys animal signs such as tracks and droppings, deploys camera traps, conducts night observations, documents individual deer, and analyses hundreds of photographs and videos.
Some field sessions may end without seeing a single deer. Yet every footprint, every camera trap image, and every observation contribute valuable information to understanding Singapore's recovering sambar deer population. This long-term monitoring helps us identify individual animals, estimate population numbers, observe behaviour, monitor health, and support conservation efforts.

It is about patience, consistency, scientific documentation, and a deep commitment to protecting a species that was once believed to be locally extinct. Every successful image represents countless unseen hours spent in the forest by our volunteers who dedicate their own time, energy, and resources to ensure these "ghosts of the forest" have a future.

The photograph may last a second. The conservation work behind it lasts for years.

Knowledge series : Rub-urination

"Rub-urination" is an instinctual deer behavior where a deer squats to urinate, allowing it to run down their hind legs and over their tarsal glands. They rub their rear legs together to coat the hair in urine, which mixes with bacteria and glandular secretions to create a unique, musky personal scent.

Knowledge Series : The Baya Weaver Bird.

During our regular field trips, we frequently pause to admire the remarkable creation of the Baya weaver bird. How is it possible for such a small bird like the Baya weaver to construct such an impressive nest?

Master Architects :
The nest of the Baya Weaver is a marvel of natural engineering. The male begins by weaving a preliminary "helmet-shaped" structure and then calls out to prospective mates. If a female inspects and approves the property, the male completes the nest by adding a long, downward-pointing entrance tunnel. If she rejects it, the male will often tear it down and start over.

Habitat and its relationship with Sambar deer

Our habitat is not simply a "deer habitat", it is an interconnected ecological community. In a healthy tropical forest habitat, species such as wild boars, baya weavers, quails, bulbuls, and many others each perform distinct ecological functions. Their collective interactions contribute to ecosystem resilience, nutrient cycling, seed dispersal, and food web stability. Removing or reducing one group can have cascading effects on the entire ecosystem.

For example:
• Fruiting trees feed sambar deer, wild boars, bulbuls, macaques, and many other species.
• Deer browsing shapes vegetation structure.
• Wild boars disturb the soil, creating germination sites for seeds dispersed by birds.
• Birds disperse seeds into those disturbed patches.
• Insects decompose dung from deer and boars, returning nutrients to the soil.
• Healthy vegetation then supports the next generation of wildlife.

This continuous cycle maintains biodiversity and ecosystem function.

At Save Sambar Deer, our conservation work evolves alongside with documenting these associated species that can be highly valuable. Recording birds, wild boars, squirrels, reptiles, and even insects alongside deer observations provides a more complete picture of habitat quality. A habitat supporting diverse wildlife generally indicates a healthier ecosystem capable of sustaining a stable sambar deer population over the long term.

In other words, conserving sambar deer also helps conserve the broader ecological community, while protecting the entire habitat benefits the deer in return. This ecosystem-based perspective is increasingly recognized as the most effective approach to long-term wildlife conservation.

Today, I am pleased to share a photograph of our magnificent Bruno, captured this morning. He appears absolutely stunning and regal with his new set of antlers, resembling a king in the field.

Throughout the past 5 years, I have observed Bruno evolve from a young deer into a fully mature adult, and it fills me with pride to see that our conservation efforts have been worthwhile.

Why seasonal fruit matters greatly?

Seasonal tropical fruit-bearing trees are among the most important ecological resources in Singapore's forests. Although they may only fruit for a few weeks or months each year, these events provide an abundance of energy rich food that supports a remarkable diversity of wildlife. For species such as sambar deer, wild boars, mouse deer, long-tailed macaques, hornbills, pigeons, bulbuls, squirrels, civets, bats, and countless insects, fruiting seasons represent periods of opportunity that influence survival, reproduction, and forest regeneration.

1. They provide a seasonal energy boost
Unlike leaves, which are generally low in digestible energy, ripe fruits are rich in sugars, carbohydrates, water, and nutrients.

During mast fruiting events, large quantities of fruit fall onto the forest floor, creating a temporary but abundant food source for:

Sambar deer
Wild boar
Lesser mouse-deer
Long-tailed macaque

The sudden increase in available calories helps animals build body condition, recover from lean periods, and support breeding or lactation.

2. They support an entire food web
A single fruiting tree feeds much more than one species.

The canopy may be occupied by macaques, squirrels, hornbills, barbets, bulbuls, and fruit bats. Fruits dropped from above are then consumed by deer, wild boars, mouse deer, civets, monitor lizards, insects, and fungi.

In this way, one tree supports dozens of species simultaneously, making it a keystone food resource during fruiting periods.

3. Sambar deer benefit from fallen fruits
Although sambar deer are primarily browsers that consume leaves, shoots, bark, and young vegetation, they readily eat fallen fruits whenever available.

Seasonal fruits provide:
Highly digestible carbohydrates additional vitamins and minerals
increased dietary variety reduced foraging effort because fruits accumulate beneath trees

This is especially valuable in Singapore's fragmented forests, where high quality forage can be patchy.

4. Wild boars become important seed dispersers
Wild boars consume enormous quantities of fallen fruits.

Many seeds survive passage through the digestive system and are deposited elsewhere in nutrient-rich dung. Others are buried while boars root through the soil.

Although boars may destroy some seeds, they also contribute to seed dispersal and forest regeneration for numerous plant species.

5. Birds spread the next generation of forests
Many tropical birds swallow fruits whole before flying considerable distances. Birds disperse seeds into forest gaps and regenerating habitats, allowing new trees to establish away from the parent tree.
Without these birds, many native trees would have difficulty expanding their populations.

6. Macaques connect the forest
Long-tailed macaques often harvest fruits directly from the canopy.

As they travel through the forest, they drop partially eaten fruits and disperse seeds through their droppings, making them important agents of forest renewal.

Their feeding also creates opportunities for ground-dwelling animals to access fruit that would otherwise remain in the canopy.

7. Fruiting trees help regenerate forests
Animals are not simply consumers, they are partners in maintaining healthy forests.

Healthy wildlife populations therefore help maintain healthy forests, and healthy forests in turn sustain wildlife.

8. Why this matters in Singapore?
Singapore retains relatively small but biologically rich forest patches. As development continues, preserving mature native fruit-bearing trees becomes increasingly important.

Removing these trees means:
Less food for wildlife increased competition among species
greater movement of animals into urban areas in search of food
reduced natural seed dispersal slower forest regeneration

Conversely, conserving and restoring native fruiting trees strengthens ecological resilience by supporting wildlife while helping forests renew themselves naturally.

A conservation perspective :
Seasonal fruit-bearing trees are far more than landscape features—they are ecological lifelines. For sambar deer, wild boars, mouse deer, macaques, birds, bats, and many other species, the annual pulse of fruit sustains wildlife, drives seed dispersal, and underpins the long-term health of Singapore's forests. Protecting these trees is therefore not only about conserving plants, but about safeguarding the intricate ecological relationships that allow an entire forest ecosystem to thrive.

A MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM - Save Sambar Deer, Ecowild Asia

Land clearance, habitat fragmentation, expanding roads, and urban development and industrial parks inevitably create uncertainty for wildlife. Yet there are also reasons for cautious optimism.

The very fact that sambar deer continue to persist in Singapore today is remarkable. A species that was once believed to be on the brink of local disappearance has demonstrated extraordinary resilience. They have adapted to fragmented landscapes, learned to navigate a human dominated environment, and continue to reproduce despite immense pressures.

What gives me hope is not only the deer themselves, but the growing number of people who care about them. Every photograph taken responsibly, every observation recorded, every public talk delivered, and every conversation that raises awareness helps build a constituency for their protection.

The future of the sambar deer may not depend solely on how much forest remains, but on whether society continues to recognize that these animals deserve a place in Singapore's landscape.

One thing I often find remarkable about deer is their ability to endure. Long before roads, housing estates, and industrial parks existed, they adapted to changing forests shaped by storms, droughts, and shifting ecosystems. Their survival has always depended on resilience. Today is no different.

Perhaps the challenge is not simply to remain positive, but to remain committed.

As long as there are team like us who are willing to document them, study them, advocate for them, and remind others that they are part of our natural heritage, their future is not left entirely to chance.
