On January 30th, the conservation team led a group of Tristanian passengers to Gough Island, sponsored by Atlantic Guardians. During this trip, we made a landing at the Glen, where we showcased a variety of wildlife, including seals, elephant seals, penguins, and even a king penguin. Additionally, the conservation team conducted pelagic camera work and worked on their temperature loggers.

On the following day, we attempted to land at the Gough base; however, the weather conditions did not allow us to do so. We returned to Tristan on February 5th. Overall, everyone had a fantastic trip despite the unfavorable weather.

We would like to welcome back our four young ocean champions: Shannon, Tristan,Kieran and Ryan. They recently completed a six month training program in the UK and also underwent training in Cape Town. During thier training, they developed a wide range of skills and achieved success. They are now back home and ready to utilize thier new skills. Congratulations, guys!!! You have made us proud 👏

Before the establishment of our MPZ we discovered through a vessel based expedition that Tristans waters were to be the first ever discovered Blue Shark pupping area in the Atlantic Ocean, Through the use of pelagic camera systems.

At this point we were also able to deploy a couple of satellite tags which gave us a very brief glimpse into how these majestic pelagic animals used our waters.

Since the establishment of the MPZ we have managed to obtain more satellite tags so we can build on the very little knowledge we already had and better understanding their population and distribution and how they use our MPZ.

On Thursday 28th February the conservation team made good use of a weather window and headed out Shark tagging. It was a very successful day. We saw at least 10 Blue sharks and managed to tag 3 adult females that were 2 metres long and one adult male being 1.8 meters in length.

We will have to wait now for about six months to get to the satellite data back from the tags. That leaves us with three remaining tags that we endeavor to deploy before the end of the season. Hopefully these tagged Blues will stay within our MPZ like the others.

So watch this space to see how we will get on.......
