Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon is a figure whose life story is woven into the very fabric of South Sudan’s identity. Often called "Mr. Self-Determination," his journey from a small village in Unity State to the halls of power in Juba is a narrative of academic brilliance, revolutionary fervor, and complex political maneuvering.

🔵 Humble Beginnings in Leer (1953)
Riek Machar was born in 1953 in Leer County, a town in the heart of what was then the Upper Nile Province. Born into the Dok Nuer Community, his early life was shaped by the traditional pastoralist rhythms of the Nuer people.
Despite his traditional roots, Machar showed an early and exceptional aptitude for formal education. At a time when many of his peers were drawn solely to the cattle camps or local militias, Machar pursued his studies with a focus that would eventually take him across the globe.

🔵 The Academic Ascent
Machar’s "humble start" was quickly transformed by his intellectual drive. He moved to the capital to attend the University of Khartoum, where he graduated with a degree in Engineering in 1977.
Seeking to sharpen his strategic mind, he traveled to the United Kingdom. His academic journey culminated in 1984 at the University of Bradford, where he earned a PhD in Philosophy and Strategic Planning. This doctorate is the source of the "Dr." title he carries with immense pride, signaling his status as a "philosopher-king" among the soldier-politicians of the South.
🔵The Visionary Rebel: "Mr. Self-Determination"
When Machar joined the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) in the mid-1980s, the movement’s official goal under John Garang was a "United, Secular, New Sudan." Machar, however, became the primary voice for a different path.
The 1991 Nasir Split: Machar argued that Southerners should not fight for a united Sudan, but for the right to choose their own destiny. In 1991, he led the Nasir faction, issuing a manifesto centered on Self-Determination
Ideological Shift:While the split led to years of devastating internal conflict, Machar’s core idea that the South must have a referendum on independence eventually became the cornerstone of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

🔵The Statesman and the Conflict
Since South Sudan’s independence in 2011, Machar’s career has been a series of high-stakes peaks and valleys:
First Vice President (2011):He stood alongside Salva Kiir as the nation’s first VP, representing the culmination of his dream for a sovereign state.
The Years of War: From 2013 to 2018, Machar led the SPLM-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) through a brutal civil war. His life during this period was marked by narrow escapes, international exile in South Africa, and a persistent refusal to be sidelined from the national stage.
The Return to Peace: In 2020, following the Revitalised Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS), he returned to Juba to once again serve as the First Vice President

Today, Dr. Riek Machar is a seasoned statesman who balances his role in the Transitional Government with his position as the leader of the country’s largest opposition group.
The Reformer: He continues to advocate for a federal system of government and the transformation of the national security sector.
The Family Man: He is married to Angelina Teny, a powerful political figure forming one of the most influential political partnerships in East Africa.
