Unity Oil Field, 15 September 2026 — The Governor of Unity State, H.E. Dr. Joseph Monytuil Wejang, today led a high-level government delegation, together with the management and operational staff of the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC), on an inspection visit to the site of the tragic incident involving a woman who fell into the Munga Pig Receiver, an open oil drainage pit within the Unity Oil Field.

The delegation included the Minister of Information and Communications, Hon. Nyakenya Johannes; the Minister of Health, Hon. Jal Puok; the Commissioner of Rubkona County, Hon. Salaam Maluit; the Division Four Commander, Maj. Gen. Manyuat Manythol; the Unity Oil Field Manager, Eng. Mathor James; and other GPOC operation management staff who are in charge of the site.

The visit was undertaken to assess the condition of the Munga Pig Receiver, review the safety measures around the facility, and establish immediate steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring. During the inspection, Governor Monytuil strongly emphasized that the protection of human life, environmental safety and the well-being of communities living around the oil-producing areas must remain a priority.

GPOC management informed the government delegation that it will immediately undertake measures to secure the Munga Pig Receiver by constructing a strong metallic fence around the open pit. The fencing will be designed to prevent unauthorized access and protect both people and livestock, including cattle, goats and other animals, from falling into the hazardous facility.

The government delegation also visited the affected woman at Bentiu State Hospital to personally assess her condition and convey the government’s sympathy and support to her family. The woman is currently stable and remains under medical treatment. The Unity State Government continues to closely follow her recovery and wishes her strength, healing and a full recovery.
