A Heavy Heart: Mourning Panyigai and Calling for an End to the Pain

It is with deep sorrow that we report what has happened in Panyigai, Budang Payam, Rubkona County. Reports say that innocent civilians, including children and women, lost their lives. Even more painful are reports that some individuals in the Ruweng Administrative Area are celebrating these deaths.

Our hearts are broken. Every life lost in Panyigai is a mother who will never cook for her children again, a child who will never laugh, a family torn apart.

Community elders in Bentiu speak through tears: “We, the people of Unity State, Bentiu, are a peace-loving people. The blood of innocent children and women should never be a reason for celebration. If we answer grief with more grief, we will only bury more of our sons and daughters. The pain will never end.”

We plead with our brothers and sisters in Ruweng Administrative Area: Do not celebrate death. Do not turn away from the shared humanity that binds us. We have lived together, traded together, and mourned together for generations. Let respect for human life guide us, not anger.

Peace advocates and local leaders are asking for calm. They are asking security agencies to investigate Panyigai through the law, not through revenge. Because every retaliation only plants seeds for more funerals, more orphaned children, more widows.

Today, Bentiu weeps. May we choose dialogue over bloodshed, so no other community has to write a statement like this again.

Mourners Gather at Mankien Airstrip as Unity State Prepares to Receive Late Mama Chuoch Ruai’s Remains

Mankien, Unity State – May 22, 2026

Governor of Unity State, H.E. Dr. Joseph Manytuil Wecjang, received mourners today, Friday, at Mankien Airstrip ahead of the arrival of the remains of the late Mama Chuoch Ruai from Juba tomorrow, Saturday.

The late Mama Chuoch Ruai will be laid to rest at her ancestral home in Mayom County.

Among those gathered were her immediate family, relatives, and loved ones, as well as descendants of the late Mama Chuoch Ruai Gaar, who came to pay their respects and stand in solidarity during this time of mourning.
