Tonj South Commissioner Presides Over Police Parade, Calls for Tighter Security in Tonj Town

Tonj South County Commissioner Hon. Gordon Makuer Tiau presided over a regular police parade at the Police Main Station in Tonj Town on Monday, urging stronger security measures day and night amid rising tensions in the town. The parade aimed to boost discipline, reform operations, and equip officers to remain alert and prepared for their duty.
Addressing the officers, Commissioner Gordon stressed the need for coordinated patrols, quick response day and night times, and close cooperation between security forces and the community to restore calm. “The security of our people cannot wait for better situations or any fortune for your own benefits. I urge you to work day and night as one team to protect lives and properties. The public must also trust and support you so we can build peace together.” said the commissioner
Police Commissioner Bol Kuchmol assured Commissioner Hon. Gordon Tiau of the police's readiness and commitment to protecting lives and property in Tonj Town. He confirmed that patrols will be carried out both day and night to safeguard all residents and prevent criminal activities carried out in the town.
The commissioner’s inspection comes as an effort to set up Police for professionalism and dedication to safeguard the people and their properties.

Subject: Clarification and Report on Incident at Adama, Thony Community That Claimed Two Lives and Injured One Other
On the evening of May 28th, 2026, Thony community requested security es**rt for a vehicle carrying mosquito nets to Adama area, Manyang-ngok, the request was made due to growing concerns about insecurity along Tiit-Magak route to Adama.
Upon arrival at the main residence, soldiers disembarked and awaited for the vehicle. At that time, an individual linked to criminal activity whose firearm had been seized by armed forces days earlier, plottedly mobilised his colleagues to attack a soldier, which successfully led to ravishment of a soldier’s weapon.
As per the official report, the confrontation intensified thereafter between soldiers and armed individuals who joined and opened fire on the soldiers. The soldiers returned fire in self-defense to protect themselves and to attemptedly rescue their weapon, which became impossible to retrieve a gun from the criminals.
During the crossfire, two civilians; a woman and a young girl tragically lost their lives, and one other sustained injury. Three suspects involved in the attack were arrested and are currently under government detention.
Tonj South County Commissioner Hon. Gordon Makuer Tiau conveyed his condolence messages to the bereaved families and the community atlarge. He also condemned the attack and warned against criminal actions that undermine peace. “Such acts against soldiers will be met with strong resistance. We remain committed to security and stability in the county,” he said.
This is not the first time government forces have faced attempted attacks by criminal groups in Tonj South County. The county authority continues to work with communities to strengthen security and prevent further incidents.
Investigations are ongoing to establish circumstances surrounding the matter.

Tonj South County Commissioner Returns After Security Visit to Tonj North
Wednesday, 27th May 2026—Tonj South County Commissioner Hon. Gordon Makuer Tiau returned to the county headquarters after a three-day security visit to Kirik Payam in Tonj North County. He was accompanied by Division 11 Commander Maj. Gen. Juma Rehan Deng and Deputy Chief of Mobilization and Disarmament Maj. Gen. Kuol Akoon Mawien.
Upon arrival, the authorities found Tonj South County calm, with only minor security reports. Commissioner Tiau thanked communities and residents for maintaining peace and calm in the days following recent incidents.
The visit to Tonj North aimed to work proactively with the Tonj North Commissioner to address high insecurity rates affecting both counties, focusing on joint measures to restore stability and prevent further escalation.

Thony Community Agrees to Return Raided Cattle and Surrender Fi****ms to the Government
Sunday, 24th May 2026, Akon-cok, Tonj South—The Division 11 Commander, Maj. Gen. Juma Rehan Deng, together with the Deputy Chief of Mobilization and Disarmament, Maj. Gen. Kuol Akoon Mawien, and the Commissioners of Tonj South and Tonj South counties traveled to Akon-cok Payam of Manyang-ngok, convened a meeting aimed to implement the agreement previously signed by the community chiefs and Mijook-wuot in Tonj Town.
The concise meeting mainly focused on the return of raided cattle to their rightful owners, and to ensure the successful implementation of the ongoing mobilization and disarmament exercise within two days related to the directives and agreements signed off.
During the concise meeting, Thony community backed down the previous incidents and agreed to return the raided cattle on due time, and knuckled down to collect and surrender fi****ms despite bordering another state.
The high-level visitation was also part of the government’s prior efforts to stabilize security and peace in the county.

High-Level Government Delegation Takes Subsidiary Actions for Three Payams After Two-Day Meeting in Tonj Town
Saturday, 23rd May 2026—A high-level government delegation traveled to three payams Malual-Muok, Mabior-Yar, and Thiet in Tonj South County to launch follow-up on the resolutions agreed upon after a two-day consultative meeting held yesterday between state and county government officials with chiefs and Mijook-wuot in Tonj Town.
Today’s subsidiary action visit aimed to strengthen the resolutions reached yesterday with agreements included the immediate return of raided cattle to their rightful owners within two days and the voluntary surrender of fi****ms to the Deputy Chief of Mobilization and Disarmament, Maj. Gen. Kuol Akoon Mawien, before forces take control of the situation.
During concise meetings in the payams, Division 11 Commander Maj. Gen. Juma Rehan Deng, the Deputy Chief of Mobilization and Disarmament, and Commissioners Hon. Gordon Makuer Tiau and Hon. Agany Lok Agany requested urgent reports within a day of the directives and agreements. This is to ensure accountability and maintain pressure for the implementation of the comprehensive agreements signed.
In response, the three payam leaders assured the government delegation of tangible outcomes within the two days declared for the collection of raided cattle and the disarmament of civilians.
The visit also aimed to enhance security efforts and stability, and included a warning against any new planned attacks on either community in Tonj South.

State Government, Chiefs and Mijook-wuot Reach Agreement on Cattle Return and Arms Surrender
Friday, 22nd May 2026, Tonj South—A high-level delegation from Warrap State Government met with chiefs and Mijook-wuot leaders in Tonj South and concluded with directives and a signed agreement on day two.
The delegation was led by State Minister of Cabinet Affairs Hon. Saferino Phillip Bazia, Division 11 Commander Maj. Gen. Juma Rian Deng, Deputy Chief of Mobilization and Disarmament Maj. Gen. Kuol Akoon Mawien, and the commissioners of Tonj South and Tonj North Counties.
The agreements reached immediate return of raided cattle to their rightful owners, beginning today without delay and voluntary surrender fi****ms by Mijook-wuot leaders and civilians of Greater Tonj to organized forces, starting immediately.
Division 11 Commander for Warrap State Maj. Gen. Juma Rian Deng and Deputy Chief Maj. Gen. Kuol Akoon Mawien warned that failure to return raided cattle within two days will result into serious consequences, urging communities to cooperate to avoid escalation.
Hon. Saferino Phillip Bazia alongside the two commissioners directed the security forces led by Division 11 commander Maj. Gen. Juma Rehan Deng and Deputy chief of Mobilization and Disarmament to jointly implement the resolutions reached during the security meeting.
The meeting ended with a shared commitment from all participants to put into practice the comprehensive agreements signed, with a focus on restoring peace, trust and stability in Greater Tonj.

State Government Delegation together with Tonj South Commissioner Call for Urgent Meeting with Community Chiefs and Mijook-wuot Following the Recurring Tensions in the County
Thursday, 21st May 2026 —A state government delegation together with Hon. Gordon Makuer Tiau, Commissioner of Tonj South County, convened a brief and high-level meeting with chiefs and Mijook-wuot in the county headquarters, to address recurring incidents of cattle raiding, theft, and night attacks in the county.
Division 11 Commander for Warrap State, Maj. Gen. Juma Rehan Deng, and his delegation informed the community chiefs and Mijook-wuot present that the meeting was urgently called to hear their views and ideas before the armed forces take action to recover raided cattle and disarm armed civilians.
Community chiefs and Mijook-wuot called for the forceful collection of all raided cattle from both sides and their return to the rightful owners by the armed forces. They also appealed to the government to implement forceful disarmament and declare a state of emergency, and affirmed their willingness to sign the document.
Hon. Agany Lok Agany, Commissioner of Tonj North County, stated that the military, led by the Division 11 Commander for Warrap State, came to fulfill its commitments and will proceed with action without compromising the community leaders and armed youth, paving the way for the implementation of a state of emergency without hesitation.
The Commissioner of Tonj South County, Hon. Gordon Makuer Tiau, adjourned the meeting until tomorrow morning and urged community leaders to engage their youth, especially the bereaved communities, to encourage civilians to remain calm and refrain from any planned attacks on the town and other communities.

Subject: Condemnation of Morning's Deadly Attack on Residents of Amathcok Area by Armed Civilians and Cattle Raiders Purportedly from Muok Community
The County Authority today at the scene, has received reports of a deadly attack carried out in the morning by armed civilians identified as criminals from Muok Community. The assailants encroached on Amathcok area, Thony community at approximately 5:30 am, killing 10 people including a woman and wounding 9 others, and 1 civilian from Muok Community. An unidentified number of cattle were also raided during the incident.
According to official reports, authorities confirmed 11 fatalities from the overnight attack, including 3 police officers, 1 SSPDF soldier, and 7 civilians.
The County Authority, led by Hon. Gordon Makuer Tiau, condemns this incident in the strongest terms possible, describing Amathcok as part of the town and a residential area to many different communities. Such acts of violence undermine peace, security, and coexistence between communities in the town and in their local villages.
The attack has sparked fear and outrage among residents of both communities, as it resulted into tragic loss of life and extensive destruction within the county.
Government security forces intervened during the attack to prevent further escalation between the parties involved. The Authority urges the bereaved community and affected families to remain calm and allow the government to take its actions and follow up the incident accordingly by establishing full circumstances behind the attack.

Tonj South County Commissioner Holds Urgent Meeting With Intellectuals, Appeals for Unity and Peace

The Commissioner of Tonj South County, Hon. Gordon Makuer Tiau, convened a high-level consultative meeting with Tonj South intellectuals at the SPLM Secretariat in Tonj Town today. The meeting focused on collaborative strategies to address insecurity, theft, and night incidents in the town and to strengthen community safety and stability.
The gathering brought together county authority officials, intellectuals, elders, State MPs, and representatives from Tonj East and North.
Participants commended the Commissioner for taking a proactive step in bringing intellectuals together, and called for close collaboration with security agencies. They emphasized the importance of maintaining security throughout the day and night, and recommended strengthening open communication between the authorities, youth, and community leaders.
The intellectuals also offered to take an active role in leading community-based peacebuilding initiatives.
Community representatives raised constructive concerns regarding neighboring communities residing in Tonj, urged them to act as peace mediators instead of involving themselves in Tonj South communal conflicts.

Former Commissioner of Tonj South, Cde Marco Agor Malang, encouraged intellectuals to practice constructive politics aimed at uniting communities and driving positive change. He appealed for commitment to support the incumbent Commissioner in delivering on these goals.
The assembly of intellectuals and participants outlined key priorities for enhancing security and development in the county. They also emphasized the need for responsible use of social media and proposed measures to address content that spreads confusion among the public.
Commissioner Hon. Gordon Makuer Tiau thanked all participants for their views and accorded to considering their suggestions for security enhancement.
