AS DELIVERED

Thank you. The United States welcomes the renewal of the South Sudan Sanctions regime, including the extension of the Panel of Experts’ mandate and the renewal of the arms embargo, travel ban, and asset freeze measures for an additional 12 months.

We also welcome the opportunity to revise the benchmarks to reflect current realities and look forward to recommendations on how best to do so from the Secretary-General in consultation with the UN Mission in South Sudan and the Panel of Experts.

We are disheartened, however, by the lack of progress on the benchmarks and the continuing deterioration of the political and security situation in South Sudan.

Let’s be clear. This lack of progress is due to a lack of political will by President Kiir, as well as other South Sudanese leaders.

South Sudan’s leaders must return to direct dialogue to de-escalate the current violence. It is farcical to suggest that such dialogue is occurring when one of the signatories to the 2018 peace agreement is under house arrest and on trial.

The Council cannot accept obstruction of the peace process or actions that threaten transitional agreements or undermine the political process in South Sudan.

We therefore urge the transitional government to deliver all steps necessary to restore peace, including declaring a national ceasefire; releasing detainees; renouncing the use of violence for political purposes; and starting to use public revenue appropriately to support the citizens of South Sudan.

For years prior to South Sudan’s independence, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement claimed to seek the end of marginalization of the southern Sudanese by leaders in Khartoum. Through bad governance and misuse of revenue, that marginalization continues, imposed by South Sudan’s own leaders.

Thank you.

Opposition, Government Urged to Back Tanzania-Led Peace Initiative for South Sudan

A political analyst and human rights advocate, Jago Daniel, has called on South Sudan’s opposition groups, the national government, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to fully support the ongoing Tanzania-led peace initiative aimed at resolving the country’s prolonged political crisis.

Speaking on the state of the political stalemate among conflicting parties, Daniel stressed that only collective commitment and constructive engagement can unlock a sustainable peace process and prevent further national decline.

He described the Tanzania-C5 Initiative as a “credible roadmap for national political recovery and renewal,” saying it presents a critical opportunity to address the root causes of South Sudan’s conflict and reverse its political, economic, and social challenges.

Daniel further emphasized that through genuine dialogue, reconciliation, and consensus-building, South Sudan could lay a stronger foundation for lasting peace, democratic governance, and long-term development for all citizens.

The appeal comes amid renewed calls for intensified regional efforts to stabilize South Sudan’s fragile political landscape.

NDM/PF Welcomes UN Sanctions Renewal, Calls for Inclusive Dialogue and Security Reforms in South Sudan

By Pasquala Clement Nyakang
Secretary General, NDM/PF

The National Democratic Movement–Patriotic Front (NDM/PF), led by Emmanuel Ajawin, has taken note of the recent decision by the United Nations Security Council to renew targeted sanctions and the arms embargo on the Republic of South Sudan.

NDM/PF views this decision as a reflection of the continued concern of the international community regarding the country’s political, security, humanitarian, and economic situation, as well as the slow progress in implementing critical reforms necessary for sustainable peace, democratic governance, and long-term stability.

While fully respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of South Sudan, the Movement emphasizes that the renewal of these measures underscores the urgent need for responsible national leadership, genuine political will, and meaningful commitment to an inclusive political process.

NDM/PF maintains that the continued proliferation of arms and the militarization of politics have significantly contributed to insecurity, displacement of civilians, intercommunal violence, human rights violations, and the shrinking of democratic and civic space across the country. In this regard, the arms embargo remains an important preventive mechanism aimed at reducing the risk of further escalation of conflict and encouraging peaceful political engagement among all stakeholders.

The Movement therefore calls upon the Transitional Government of National Unity to engage constructively with regional and international partners, including the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the United Nations (UN), in order to address the root causes of the conflict and create conditions conducive to a genuine democratic transition.

NDM/PF further urges the government to respond positively to ongoing efforts by H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, aimed at advancing an inclusive political dialogue that can deliver a comprehensive and lasting peace for the people of South Sudan.

The Movement reiterates that durable peace and national stability can only be achieved through inclusive political dialogue, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, adherence to the rule of law, security sector reforms, good governance, and the establishment of democratic institutions that reflect the aspirations and diversity of the people of South Sudan.

NDM/PF remains firmly committed to the pursuit of a peaceful, democratic, united, and stable South Sudan founded on justice, equality, accountability, national reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence among all communities.

Press Statement On the Renewal of Sanctions and Arms Embargo on South Sudan.

28/05/2026

Political analyst and human rights advocate Jago Daniel has accused the government of fueling division within the Awiel community and Gogrial neighborhoods, claiming the regime is promoting hatred and ethnic tensions after previously relying on Awiel sons to defend it.

In his statement, Jago Daniel said President Salva Kiir is no longer capable of uniting South Sudanese people, alleging that corruption, ethnic division, and criminal cartels within the inner circle of power are worsening the country’s political and social crisis.

He called on communities to resist what he described as deliberate attempts to infiltrate hatred and division among the people of South Sudan.

Opposition group open to talks without preconditions - Radio Tamazuj 27/05/2026

South Sudan’s holdout opposition alliance SSOMA said it was ready to enter peace talks with the government without preconditions, but insisted any negotiations should not be held in Kenya or Uganda, citing concerns over neutrality.

The remarks by Ambassador Emmanuel Ajawin, secretary-general of the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA), followed consultations in Dar es Salaam led by former Tanzanian president and African Union envoy Jakaya Kikwete as part of efforts to revive South Sudan’s stalled peace process.

SSOMA is a coalition of non-signatory opposition groups led by Gen. Thomas Cirillo, whose National Salvation Front (NAS) has been fighting government forces since 2017.
