More than 83,000 people in South Sudan are facing catastrophic levels of hunger and are on the brink of starvation, according to a new food security report released on Thursday.
The report attributes the worsening crisis to a combination of conflict, economic hardship, and recurring climate shocks. The findings come as the government and humanitarian agencies raise the alarm over rising malnutrition rates, particularly among women and children.
National Minister of Agriculture Abdal Bagi Akol said the situation is rapidly deteriorating, with malnutrition reaching alarming levels across much of the country.
โPregnant and breastfeeding women are in need of urgent malnutrition support. Of the 80 counties, 62 are worsening, and 11 are on the brink of even more critical levels,โ Akol said during a press briefing in Juba.
โThe government of the Republic of South Sudan recognises the gravity of this crisis. We do not deny it. We do not run from it. We face it head on. Today, I stand here to issue a resounding call for action.โ
The report also estimates that around 2.5 million children are currently at risk of malnutrition, with urgent interventions needed to prevent further deterioration.
Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator Anita Akiki echoed the urgency, linking the crisis directly to conflict and insecurity in parts of the country.
โPeace matters. In areas of conflict in Upper Nile, food security and malnutrition for the most vulnerable have slipped into IPC Phase 5 levels. That is catastrophic,โ Akiki said. โIn 10 counties where violence has subsided, food security has improved, moving from IPC Phase 4 to Phase 3. This reinforces a fundamental truth: where peace prevails, communities can recover.โ
She warned that South Sudan is facing a โperfect stormโ of overlapping crises and called for immediate, coordinated support from the international community.
The latest assessment serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address both the root causes of hunger

Government Approves PETRONAS' Withdrawal from Oil Sector
Juba, 19th August 2024--- The government has officially approved the withdrawal of PETRONAS Carigali Nile Company Limited from the country's oil sector. This follows a strategic decision made after a technical Committee presented its findings and recommendations to President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday.
The Minister of Presidential Affairs Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro says all assets and shares of PETRONAS will now be transferred to Nilepet. Bakosoro emphasized that the government would communicate its acceptance of PETRONAS' withdrawal through written notification to the company.
The Undersecretary in the Ministry of Petroleum, Dr. Chol Thon, confirmed that Nilepet would assume the responsibilities previously held by PETRONAS. He also mentioned that Nilepet would actively seek out partnerships with other international companies to ensure the seamless continuation of operations in the oil field.
Dr. Chol clarified that the government's engagement was primarily with PETRONAS Carigali Nile Company Limited rather than its parent company, PETRONAS International Limited. This distinction highlights the specific focus on the subsidiary's involvement in the South Sudanese oil sector.
