Juba|3 June 2026 - This morning, in a formal ceremony held at the National Public Health Institute headquarters, Health Minister Hon. Luke Thompson Thoan officially witnessed the handover of 10 newly donated vehicles to the National Public Health Institute (NPHI). The vehicles were donated by the President's Envoy on Special Programmes, Hon. Adut Kiir Mayardit, as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard the public health emergency response to Ebola preparedness.

Hon. Luke Thompson emphasised that these vehicles are designated specifically for Ebola response preparedness, ensuring rapid deployment in the event of outbreaks.

Dr Kediende Chong, the Executive Director of the NPHI, clarified that the vehicles will not be assigned to individual staff but will be used solely for preparedness activities and emergency response, including Ebola readiness efforts.

He further mentioned that the vehicles will undergo official registration, with assistance from the Office of the President, which has committed to facilitating this process. "As you know, the NPHI is still a relatively new institution without its own dedicated budget, so the registration and issuance of license and number plates will be supported by government authorities," Dr. Kediende explained.

Additionally, he stated that modifications, such as installing protective cages for supply transportation and attaching bull bars for added vehicle protection, will be carried out. All vehicles will prominently feature the NPHI logo to ensure clear identification and branding.

Juba | 2 June 2026 — Today, the Presidential Envoy on Special Programmes, Hon. Adut Kiir Mayardit paid a courtesy visit to the National Public Health Institute (NPHI) and the Infectious Diseases Unit (IDU) in Juba to support emergency preparedness and response capacity amid the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (BVD) outbreak which has affected several areas in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Upon her arrival at the NPHI, Hon. Adut Salva Kiir was welcomed by the Minister of Health, Hon. Luke Thompson Thoan, along with the Executive Director of the National Public Health Institute, Dr. Kediende Chong Mapuor, the WHO - Republic of South Sudan Country Representative Dr. Humphrey Karamagi, UNICEF South Sudan Country Representative, Mrs Noala Skinner, and other key health partners actively involved in outbreak response.

Hon. Adut Kiir reiterated that health remains a critical focus in her special programs, emphasising the importance of civic education campaigns, widespread public awareness, and individual responsibility to prevent disease outbreaks. She stressed the need to enhance community engagement and ensure that health messages reach vulnerable populations.

To bolster NPHI’s emergency preparedness, the Envoy pledged to donate 10 robust, four-wheel-drive vehicles to support rapid response teams, and ensure swift transportation of medical supplies and personnel across remote and hard-to-reach areas.

After concluding her visit to the NPHI, Hon. Adut Kiir proceeded to the Infectious Disease Unit located at Jebel Kujur. Accompanied by the Minister of Health and key health partners, she evaluated the facility's readiness, inspecting isolation wards, medical equipment, and staff training protocols.

The Ministry of Health maintains a high alert status for Ebola. Measures such as intensified surveillance at border crossings, expanded border screening procedures, and upgrades to isolation facilities are ongoing. Despite the current absence of confirmed cases within the country, South Sudan remains vigilant and prepared for potential outbreaks.
