Today, in the trenches of our shared struggle, I had the distinct privilege of engaging Honourable Undersecretary of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hon. Sultan Kerjiok, once again at his office. Ours was not a casual meeting, it was a convergence of minds committed to purpose, discipline, and the unfinished mission before us.

Comrade Sultan Lam Tungwar aku Kerjiok stands as one of the most formidable young leaders of our time. His political comeback is not just a return to form, but a testament to resilience and conviction. It reminds us all that belief, though it may waver under pressure, never truly dies, it regroups, rebuilds, and rises again with greater clarity and purpose.

In the spirit of solidarity, we press forward, steadfast, united, and unshaken.

The ASK Foundation under the indefatigable leadership of Her Excellency Adut Kiir Mayardit the Founder of ASK Foundation and the Executive Director, Eng. Deng Arop Mawien and the entire team of ASK Foundation today organised and celebrated the World Water Day. As the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), we are glad to be part of this wonderful initiative that brought four (4) schools together in a friendly competition.

As the MWRI, we pledge to work alongside ASK Foundation in addressing critical issues like Water sanitation, urban connectivity of water, water laws and rights.

World Water Day is an annual United Nations (UN) observance day held on 22nd March that highlights the importance of fresh water. As Nile passes 97% of our country, it is essential to note that effective socio-economic transformation in our country can not be effected if water sector is ignored. It is in that ground that we are committed to uphold the strategic vision of H.E Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit in advancing prosperity for our nascent Republic.

The 20th Regional Nile Day Celebration

South Sudan, for the first time since its independence, host the 20th Regional commemoration of Nile Day in our beautiful city of Juba. This historic event happens every 22nd February to mark the birth date of the Nile Basin Initiative in 1999. The event under the theme: "Voice of the Nile; Community, Youth, Women Engagement in Water Governance" was honourably graced by Her Excellency Josephine Lagu Yanga, the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan and Chair of the Service Cluster as the Chief Guest.

About 97% of South Sudan lies in the Nile Basin, its strategic position situated at the heart of White Nile coupled with its stewardship of the Sudd, one of the world's largest and most ecologically significant wetlands place the Government and the people of South Sudan at the central Nile water issues.

South Sudan's central position makes it a natural bridge between upstream and downstream states, underscoring the shared responsibility and mutual benefits that Nile cooperation brings. It is in that backdrop that South Sudan, amongst other countries is doubling its unwavering efforts in leading consultative and constructive engagement with the non-ratifying member states of the Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA).

To the people of South Sudan, the Nile is not just a river, almost all our communities depend heavily on the Nile and its resources for livelihoods, mobility, and cultural identity. The Nile is our life! Therefore, South Sudan dearly exemplifies the importance of cooperation on transboundary waters for sustainable development.

Crucial to note is that, South Sudan continues to suffer from the devastating impacts of climate change, particularly recurring floods and droughts in some parts of the country. I, therefore, take this opportunity to appeal to the riparian countries, water experts, policy makers, and academia to collectively support us in crafting lasting solutions to these pressing issues.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), under the indefatigable leadership of Hon. James Mawich Makuach, is working tirelessly to ensure that the Nile drives the very much socio-economic transformation our nascent Republic badly needs. With the support from Development partners, the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), the Nile Council of Ministers (Nile. COM), and other stakeholders, we are embarking on not only connecting both urban and rural areas with clean drinking water, but also employ high-tech water monitoring mechanism to assess water quantity and quality at different points along the Nile.

To realise this, we are engaging all sectors of our communities. We are cognizant of the fact that Youth and women represent the largest share of the total Nile population. It is in this context that we will at all times ensure a people-centred approach to water management issues while appreciating both our indigenous knowledge and understanding of the Nile and the modern technology to arrive at efficient results.

The 20th Regional Nile commemoration registered a huge success. I therefore, take this golden opportunity to wholeheartedly thank H.E Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, the President of the Republic of South Sudan for his unflinching commitment and wise leadership in making sure South Sudan becomes an active player in the Nile water governance.

I equally thank the South Sudan Council of Ministers for supporting this event all the way from its preparatory stages to it's colorful conclusion. Notably, we appreciate the wise patronage of Hon. Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs. It is through his wise counsel and guidance that Nile Day becomes a success in Juba. We are greatly indebted to the development partners for their unwavering support.

On behalf of MWRI, and that of my own, we are very much pleased and elated by the presence of H.E Ms Calinie Mabrushimana, Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock in the Republic of Burundi and the Chairperson of the Nile-COM

We appreciate all the Nile-COM member states for turning up amidst their busy schedules back home to come and join us in Juba. We hope to see you soon in Juba.

South Sudan Steps Up Preparations for Historic Nile Day Celebration.

Juba, Feb. 6, 2026 – The Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-GONU) has intensified efforts to ensure security and cleanliness ahead of the 20th Nile Day commemoration, set to take place in Juba on February 22.
