6 members of the Japanese Self defence force based at UNMISS Tomping attended an event at Juba baseball stadium last weekend to promote karate in South Sudan.
The event was put on by the South Sudan Tigers Karate Accadamy to encourage more people to take up the martial art. Karate is already enjoying big popularity in the country but it was hoped this event would encourage more to take part including more children.
The club normally trains opposite the Kenyan embassy. The event included a demonstration of kata (a series of movements against imaginary opponents) from the South Sudanese students as well as the four Japanese black belts who attended.
Plus breaking of burning bricks and a demonstration of self defence using brooms and a chair. The event was attended by members of the public including a representative from the Japanese embassy.
