Did you know that one famous brand of canned fish once received its name directly from the King of Sweden and Norway 👑🇸🇪🇳🇴

The story goes back to 1902, when King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway ( during the reign of King Chulalongkorn in Siam) tasted sardines from one of Stavanger’s (Norway) leading canneries. He was so impressed that he granted the company the honour of using his name.

From that moment on, the brand has proudly carried the title “King Oscar.” 🫶✨

It has now been one week since Sweden celebrated a truly special and heartfelt occasion, the 80th birthday of His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf. 🎉🇸🇪

The celebrations in Stockholm brought together guests from near and far, including Their Majesties King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana. Their presence made this meaningful moment even more special and reflected the close and longstanding friendship between Sweden and Thailand. 🇸🇪🤝🇹🇭

As we look back on this memorable celebration, we are happy to share some highlights capturing the warm connection and friendship between our two countries.

🇸🇪⚡🇹🇭 Sweden & Thailand deepen clean energy cooperation (English below)

Business Sweden และกฟผ. การไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิตแห่งประเทศไทย ได้ลงนามบันทึกเพิ่มเติม (addendum) ต่อจากบันทึกความเข้าใจ (MoU) ที่มีอยู่ เพื่อขยายความร่วมมือไปยังสาขาต่าง ๆ อาทิ การฟื้นฟูพื้นที่เหมือง พลังงานชีวมวล ระบบไฟฟ้าพลังน้ำแบบสูบกลับ และการเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการใช้พลังงาน โดยพิธีลงนามจัดขึ้น ณ ทำเนียบเอกอัครราชทูตสวีเดน

บันทึกเพิ่มเติมฉบับนี้ต่อยอดจากความร่วมมือที่เริ่มต้นในปี 2023 และสนับสนุนการเปลี่ยนผ่านด้านพลังงานของประเทศไทย รวมถึงเป้าหมายด้านความยั่งยืนในระยะยาว

Business Sweden and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) have signed an addendum to their existing MoU, expanding collaboration into areas such as mine rehabilitation, biomass, pumped storage hydropower and energy efficiency. The signing took place in the Swedish Ambassador’s residence.

The addendum builds on the partnership launched in 2023 and supports Thailand’s ongoing energy transition and long term sustainability goals.

A great example of Sweden and Thailand working together for real impact in line with our bilateral strategic partnership. 💡🌱

👗♻️ Swopping clothes for a sustainable (and fashionable) embassy! (English below)

ท่านทราบหรือไม่ว่า การผลิตเสื้อยืดผ้าฝ้ายเพียงหนึ่งตัวต้องใช้น้ำประมาณ 2,700 ลิตร ซึ่งเพียงพอต่อความต้องการน้ำดื่มของคนหนึ่งคนได้นานถึง 2.5–3 ปี

✨ สถานทูตสวีเดนได้จัดกิจกรรมแลกเปลี่ยนเสื้อผ้า เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้เจ้าหน้าที่ได้ปรับเปลี่ยนตู้เสื้อผ้าในแบบที่ยั่งยืน และหลายคนก็ได้พบกับไอเท็มใหม่ ๆ จากการ แลกเปลี่ยนครั้งนี้ โดยเสื้อผ้าที่เหลือยังถูกนำไปบริจาคให้กับองค์กรการกุศลอีกด้วย 👕👚

Did you know that producing a single cotton t-shirt requires approximately 2,700 liters of water which is enough to meet one person's drinking water needs for 2.5 to 3 years.

✨ The Embassy of Sweden organized a clothes swop to give staff an opportunity to update their wardrobe in a sustainable way and many managed to find new treasures in the swop. The surplus was donated to a charity. 👕👚

Congratulations to Thailand’s Finalists in This Year’s Stockholm Junior Water Prize! 🇹🇭💧 🇸🇪 (English below)

เมื่อสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา สถานเอกอัครราชทูตสวีเดนมีความยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ได้เข้าร่วมพิธีมอบรางวัล Thailand Junior Water Prize ประจำปีนี้ โดยมีทีมจากโรงเรียนทั่วประเทศไทยเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันทั้งหมด 32 ทีม สถานทูตฯ รู้สึกประทับใจกับความหลากหลายและความซับซ้อนของแนวคิดที่นำเสนอ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการพัฒนาเครื่องมือให้เกษตรกรสามารถตรวจสอบคุณภาพน้ำจากระยะไกล การบำบัดน้ำเสียจากภาคอุตสาหกรรมเพื่อกำจัดไมโครพลาสติก รวมถึงแนวทางในการรับมือกับปัญหาการตัดไม้ทำลายป่าและน้ำท่วม เป็นต้น

ในแต่ละปี มีนักเรียนหลายพันคนจากประมาณ 40 ประเทศเข้าร่วม Stockholm Junior Water Prize ซึ่งเป็นเวทีการแข่งขันระดับนานาชาติสำหรับเยาวชนอายุระหว่าง 15–20 ปี ที่พัฒนาโครงการวิจัยเชิงนวัตกรรมเพื่อแก้ไขปัญหาด้านน้ำของโลก การแข่งขันนี้จัดขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปีตั้งแต่ปี 1997 และเป็นส่วนสำคัญของงาน World Water Week ที่กรุงสตอกโฮล์ม

สำหรับผู้ชนะระดับประเทศของประเทศไทยในปีนี้ ได้แก่ นางสาวณัฐชยา ดอนไพรกา และนางสาวรินธิดา บุญคล้อย จากอำเภอหัวหิน พร้อมด้วยอาจารย์ที่ปรึกษา นางสาวนันทารัตน์ เจริญสุข ผู้ชนะมาจากโรงเรียนวังไกลกังวล ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ ในอำเภอหัวหิน โดยผลงานที่ได้รับรางวัลคือการพัฒนา seed ball ด้วยวัสดุจากวัสดุธรรมชาติ เช่น ขุยมะพร้าวและเศษหญ้าแฝก ลูกบอลเมล็ดพันธุ์นี้ช่วยกักเก็บความชื้นรอบเมล็ดและช่วยให้อากาศถ่ายเทได้ดี ส่งผลให้เมล็ดมีโอกาสเติบโตได้มากขึ้นในพื้นที่ฟื้นฟูป่า 🌳🌾

Last week the Embassy of Sweden was happy to attend the award ceremony of this year’s Thailand Junior Water Prize. 32 teams from schools around Thailand participated in the competition. The Embassy was impressed by the complexity and variety of the ideas presented, included on how farmers can monitor water quality from a distance, how industrial wastewater can be cleaned from microplastics, and how to fight deforestation and floodings, to name a few.

Each year, thousands of students from around 40 countries take part in Stockholm Junior Water Prize, an international competition for young people aged 15 to 20 who develop innovative research projects to address global water challenges. The competition has been held annually since 1997 and is an important part of the World Water Week in Stockholm.

This year’s winners of the national competition in Thailand are Miss Natchaya Donpraika and Miss Rinthida Bunkloy, together with their research advisor Miss Nantarat Charoensuk. The winners come from Wang Klai Kang Won School under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King in Hua Hin. They were awarded for developing small seed balls made from natural materials such as coconut fibre and dried grass. These seed balls help keep moisture around the seeds and let air reach them, which improves their chances of growing successfully in areas where forests are being restored. 🌳 🌾

The finalists are given the opportunity to travel to Stockholm to compete against students from around the world, and the award is presented by the Prize’s patron, H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. Thailand last won the competition in 2016, and we hope they will achieve great success again this year. 🏆 🇹🇭

Journalists Invited to Dialogue on Press Freedom 📰 (English below)

วันนี้ 3 พฤษภาคม เป็นวัน เสรีภาพสื่อมวลชนโลก (World Press Freedom Day) ซึ่งองค์การสหประชาชาติกำหนดขึ้นเพื่อคุ้มครองเสรีภาพของสื่อ และยกย่องความเสียสละของผู้สื่อข่าวทั่วโลก เนื่องในโอกาสสำคัญนี้ สื่อมวลชนได้รับเชิญเข้าร่วมการสนทนากับ เอกอัครราชทูต Anna Hammargren เพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็นเกี่ยวกับความท้าทายและโอกาสของเสรีภาพสื่อ ท่ามกลางบริบทของความขัดแย้งทางอาวุธและความตึงเครียดทางภูมิรัฐศาสตร์ที่เพิ่มสูงขึ้น การหารือครั้งนี้เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้เข้าร่วมได้แลกเปลี่ยนมุมมองเกี่ยวกับสถานการณ์เสรีภาพสื่อในปัจจุบัน ตลอดจนแนวทางในอนาคตในการส่งเสริมสื่อเสรีและสื่ออิสระ 📻

Today, 3 May, marks World Press Freedom Day, a United Nations observance held annually to protect press freedom and honour the sacrifices made by journalists. In recognition of the significance of this day, journalists were invited to a dialogue with Ambassador Anna Hammargren to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing press freedom in a period marked by armed conflicts and rising geopolitical tensions. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives on the current state of press freedom, as well as on future efforts to promote free and independent media.📻

Globally, UNESCO’s World Trends Report 2022–2025 shows that press freedom has experienced its steepest decline since 2012. A contributing factor is the growing manipulation of information, including the misuse of artificial intelligence, which is undermining public trust and national security. At the same time, independent media outlets face increasing economic pressures, which threaten their ability to operate independently. These trends highlight the importance of strengthening safeguards for press freedom. 📢

เช่นเดียวกับที่คนไทยเคยติดตามชีวิตประจำวันของแพนด้า หรือเมื่อไม่นานมานี้กับลูกฮิปโปแคระ “หมูเด้ง” คนสวีเดนเองก็หลงใหลในการเฝ้าดูสัตว์ต่าง ๆ ในถิ่นอาศัยตามธรรมชาติของพวกมันเช่นกัน

ทุกฤดูใบไม้ผลิ ผู้ชมจากทั่วโลกจะรับชมการถ่ายทอดสดหนึ่งในธรรมเนียมธรรมชาติอันแสนสงบของสวีเดน — Den stora älgvandringen (The Great Elk Trek) ซึ่งในปีนี้จัดขึ้นเป็นปีที่ 8 แล้ว

Every spring, viewers around the world tune in to watch the livestream of Sweden’s most peaceful nature traditions: Den stora älgvandringen, now in its eighth year.

For thousands of years, elk have followed the same ancient route through the forests of northern Sweden. Today, you can follow their journey live, 24 hours a day, from Kullberg near Junsele in Ångermanland.

This tradition also reflects something deeply Swedish: our close connection to nature and the Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten).

ที่กรุงเทพฯ เราได้ร่วมเฉลิมฉลองด้วย Royal Fika โดยมีขนมหวานชื่อดังของสวีเดนอย่าง Princess Cake 🍰☕

เพื่อเพิ่มกลิ่นอายความเป็นไทย เพื่อนร่วมงานชาวสวีเดนของเรายังได้ลิ้มลองขนมไทยมงคล ซึ่งมักใช้ในงานสำคัญต่าง ๆ เพื่อสื่อถึงความโชคดี ความเจริญรุ่งเรือง และความเป็นสิริมงคล

ถือเป็นการเฉลิมฉลองที่แสนหวานแห่งมิตรภาพและวัฒนธรรมระหว่างสวีเดนและไทย 🇸🇪🇹🇭✨

To celebrate a meaningful moment for Sweden and the Swedish people, the Embassy of Sweden hosted a Royal Fika today honouring His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf on his 80th birthday. 🎉

Celebrations are taking place in Stockholm, bringing together distinguished guests including Their Majesties King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana, highlighting the strong ties between Sweden and Thailand. 🇸🇪🤝🇹🇭

Here in Bangkok, we joined the celebrations with a Royal Fika, featuring the beloved Swedish Princess Cake. 🍰☕

To add a Thai touch, our Swedish colleagues also got to try traditional Thai auspicious desserts — often served during important celebrations to symbolise good fortune and prosperity.

A sweet celebration of friendship and culture 🇸🇪🇹🇭✨

สุขสันต์วันแรงงาน

วันนี้ วันที่ 1 พฤษภาคม เราร่วมเฉลิมฉลองความทุ่มเทและบทบาทสำคัญของแรงงานทั้งในสวีเดน ไทย และทั่วโลก 👷‍♀️👨‍🏭🌏

สวีเดนมีประเพณีอันยาวนานด้านการเจรจาหารือทางสังคม การร่วมเจรจาต่อรองและความร่วมมืออย่างใกล้ชิดระหว่างภาครัฐ นายจ้าง และลูกจ้าง ซึ่งมีส่วนสำคัญในการสร้างตลาดแรงงานที่เป็นธรรม ปลอดภัย และไม่ทิ้งใครไว้ข้างหลัง หลักการเหล่านี้ยังคงเป็นแนวทางสำคัญในการส่งเสริมงานที่มีคุณค่า ความเสมอภาค การคุ้มครองทางสังคมที่ครอบคลุม และการเติบโตอย่างยั่งยืน 🤝✨

สิทธิมนุษยชนในที่ทำงานเป็นรากฐานสำคัญของพัฒนาประชาธิปไตย การเคารพสิทธิแรงงานช่วยลดความเหลื่อมล้ำทางเศรษฐกิจ และเสริมสร้างชุมชนที่เข้มแข็งและมีพลังมากขึ้น ⚖️💼

Today, on 1st of May, we celebrate the dedication and contributions of workers in Sweden, Thailand, and around the world. 👷‍♀️👨‍🏭🌏

Sweden’s long tradition of social dialogue, collective bargaining, and close cooperation between government, employers, and workers has helped build a fair, safe, and inclusive labour market. These principles continue to guide efforts to promote decent work, equality, inclusive social protection, and sustainable growth. 🤝✨

Human rights in the workplace are essential to democratic development. Respect for labour rights supports economic equality and contributes to more resilient and empowered communities. ⚖️💼

And just a small note: although today is May Day, the Embassy is open as usual but we promise we are celebrating in spirit. 😉
