Chiang Mai is an excellent communications centre with a railway to Bangkok, direct flights to KL Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Vietnam, China and Burma, daily flights to all parts of Thailand and hourly flights to Bangkok. While Chiang Mai itself is an ancient walled city with tree lined streets and over one thousand temples, outside of the city there are modern department stores and international supermarkets e.g. Auchan, Carrefour and Tesco / Lotus. Due to being 1000 meters above sea level the temperature does not exceed 25 degrees for the winter months; Chiang Mai is north of the equator.
