Pleasant news :
Our Project “Local Flow School” got an Honorable Mentions Award from Nepal School Project Architecture Competition.
-----------------------------
The competition asked architects from around the world to propose a prototype school for Flood-resistant, Earthquake-Resilient, Eco-Friendly, Modular and Community-Centric that can be built in multiple rural locations in Nepal.
-----------------------------
: Local Flow School :
Architects: Nawit Ongsavangchai and Suttikan Pattalapo

The school is formed by 3 main components; Gable room raised on stilts, Lean-to veranda and Enclosed ground space, to answer flexible demand and adaptation when disaster by flood and earthquake occurred, and future extensions. The structures of gable rooms are RCC for foundations and columns of the ground floor, while those from the upper floor to the roof is steel frame, to secure an elastic quality for the whole structure that well resist for quake. In addition to this, bamboos are used for purlins to support corrugated fiber cement roof tiles and corrugated translucent roof tiles. The bamboos purlins are attached to the iron roof frame by rope fastening technic, which flexible for vibration, while two roofing materials are overlapping roofed to secure thermal comfort for the interior space by stack ventilation. Except fiber cement boards walls on the width of the gable which are directly exposed to rain and sunlight, wall, door and window frames on the length under projecting eaves are made of hardwood filled with wooden planks and louvers, or woven panels of local materials and patterns. The extension of study rooms or other functional rooms can be done by construction of a new unit of Gable room raised on stilts which is fundamentally based on modular system. The rows of Gable room raised on stilts will be linked by Lean-to veranda.

The structures of Lean-to veranda are similar to those of gable rooms. Covered Roofs can be alternatively built, if full protection from rain and sunlight requires, while sub-roofs can be freely added by using bamboo frame for making screening plane by colored shade nets or other interlaced materials to procure soft shade and filter strong sunlight, or to attach decorative items during school festivals.

Extension of spaces can be alternatively done on the horizontal plane as well, by building enclosed rooms under the lifted-up structures on stilts. Concrete blocks are used for wall materials of these enclosed room, due to good durability and resistance for the flood, The top of the wall will drop from the steel frame of above flooring, for opening of natural ventilation and lighting. A steel plate will be placed on the top of the wall and vertically joined with the above floor steel frame, forming frames for the mosquito wire screen, and extra strength for the concrete block walls.
