"Together, we have an opportunity to strengthen the justice system, improve public safety, and positively impact individuals, families and communities." - the Honourable Devesh Maharaj, Minister of Justice and Minister in the Office of the Attorney General, during his feature address at the launch for the Implementation of Dissuasion Commissions in Trinidad and Tobago.
The newly launched Dissuasion Commission aims to focus on reform rather than prosecution for individuals involved in minor, low-level drug offences. By shifting away from punitive measures, the Commission establishes a structured pathway centered on rehabilitation, treatment, and social support for eligible persons.
This initiative is a collaborative effort between the European Union, COPOLAD, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Homeland Security. It also integrates key representatives from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Ministry of Health, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the Probation Division, and the Judiciary.
