About the Greening Dunda-Zero Waste Bagamoyo Project
“Zero Waste” is a strategy to minimize the amount of materials and resources consumed in order to conserve water, energy and resources and to ultimately adapt and mitigate climate change. Early 2016, Dunda Ward, Bagamoyo District Council, Tanzania started working towards a community without waste through public education and practical application of Zero Waste principles. They set a goal to achieve zero waste and to challenge other communities to develop a comprehensive inventory of all its waste streams and provide recommendations that would move the community closer to its zero waste goals.
The Greening Dunda-Zero Waste Bagamoyo project has been established to promote positive alternatives to landfill and incineration and to raise community awareness of the social, cultural and economic benefits to be gained when waste is regarded as a resource base upon which can build both employment and business opportunity.
The simple technology and methods required to achieve Zero Waste exist in every community around the world. Therefore the Greening Dunda- Zero Waste Bagamoyo Project seeks to connect community champions to leaders in the field who can provide communities with models, projects, people and the means to help develop Zero Waste as an ultimate goal.
The Greening Dunda- Zero Waste Bagamoyo Project will:
o Initiate and facilitate research and information sharing for the promotion of Zero Waste within Bagamoyo District Council Tanzania as a model for Tanzania/East Africa Communities
o Build capacity to effectively implement Zero Waste in Tanzania/East Africa Communities
o Set standards for the application of Zero Waste in Tanzania/East Africa Communities
