LEFT WITH NOTHING TO GIVE THAN A FIGHT AGAINST OPPRESSION.
UWAWAMA organized the commemoration of International Working-Class Women’s Day with grassroots women, as it has always done. Our theme this year focused on collective social rights and equality of opportunity for poor women as the foundation for combating structural inequality and achieving substantive gender equality.
In line with UWAWAMA’s six abiding demands for the working-class women and our strong belief in organizing people around their needs, this year’s event reflected on the most forgotten social rights that predominantly affect women, with special emphasis on the right to water. The right to water was highlighted not only because it is among the neglected rights but also due to the ongoing water crisis in Dar es Salaam and other parts of the country, alongside the government’s plan to privatize the service.
The gathering brought together working-class people from various cooperatives, grassroots organizations, and secondary school students. Among other discussions, they reflected on the current water crisis in Dar es Salaam and its resulting socio-economic burden on poor women and the entire marginalized community.
The gathering also addressed the government’s plans to privatize water services amid the ongoing crisis. Poor women criticized the plan, demonstrating how it would add to the existing hardships faced by women and marginalized communities. The group insisted that privatization of social services benefits the market while pushing the poor majority further into poverty.
While the official global theme called for rights, justice, and action for all women and girls, these women emphasized that with privatization policies at the center, rights will largely remain on paper, justice will continue to be an expensive commodity, and actions will primarily benefit capitalists.
As the “Give to Gain” hashtag trended, these women conveyed that the current system takes everything from them by force, leaving them with only one thing to give a fight against such systems in the hope of gaining liberation.

HAPPY REVOLUTIONARY WORKING-CLASS WOMEN’S DAY.
UWAWAMA wishes all the poor women a revolutionary Working-Class Women's Day.
We join our comrade sisters across the globe to reflect on our collective struggle, celebrate our gains, and remind ourselves that our struggle must continue.
Today, as the world is gradually becoming a battleground for endless imperialist wars, we hold a space for all the women who are suffering in the occupied territories, women whose countries are under military attack or economic blockade.
We call out the war aggressors whose greed has always compromised the safety of women and children.
To the women in power who serve the interests of greedy warmongers, the sisterhood is ashamed of you. And those presiding over the violent states and utilizing them to oppress fellow women, we shall never forget your betrayal.
To the fellow working-class women, let’s continue the struggle with clarity. No illusions about the grand women’s rights jargons and programs that are detached from our own realities. No settling for tokenism inclusions. It’s either a total liberation from all the systems of oppression or nothing at all.
Happy Revolutionary Working-Class Women’s Day.

HAIL TO THE ALTERNATIVE KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION FROM BELOW…
The president of Abahlal baseMjondolo movement, comrade S'bu Zikode will launch two books recently published by Darja Press in Cape Town on 13 December.
The first, _Twenty Years of Courage and Struggle: Twenty Years of Organising in the Shanty Towns of South Africa_ was produced by the movement via an inclusive process that ran over some months to record the history of the movement in advance of the celebration of its twentieth anniversary on 4 October 2025.
The second _We Are Still Not Counted As Human: Reflections on the Struggle for Dignity in South Africa_ is a long interview with S’bu Zikode that traces the arc of his life and struggle and thought.
As staunch advocates of the knowledge production from below, we congratulate and thank him for these import pieces of knowledge emanating from the working-class people’s realities.
They will surely be useful in our ongoing political education programs.

Day four at the Winnie Mandela Cooperative School saw the fifth and sixth core principles of the cooperative movement in action; the learning tour to the pastoralists' cooperative, CHAWAKIM, became an avenue for collective learning and provided an opportunity for the two cooperatives to support each other's businesses in the spirit of cooperation among cooperatives.
The 2025 cohort concludes with new experiences and increased determination for the participating cooperatives to collaborate effectively in the ongoing process of establishing the working people's cooperative platform.

The Winnie Mandela Cooperative School kicked off two days ago and continues to engage participants in a range of enriching activities.
The first day was dedicated to presentations by participants, who shared their findings on research questions assigned during the first semester as part of the participatory research segment. This session encouraged knowledge exchange, critical thinking, and group discussion around the day today challenges of the working-class people in their working areas and key issues relevant to building a strong cooperative movement.
On the second day, a cooperative officer delivered an informative presentation on the history, core concepts, and guiding principles of cooperatives. This session provided valuable background and context, helping participants understand the origins and foundational values that underpin cooperative organizations.
As day three and four continue unfolding, participants are deepening their understanding through interactive sessions and collaborative activities. On day four, there will be a learning trip to the pastoralists' cooperative, which owns a factory for processing dairy products. This excursion aims to offer practical insights, allowing participants to observe cooperative principles in action and engage directly with cooperative members.
Through collective learning, the poor people are advancing the cooperative movement and challenging the capitalist mode of ownership and distribution while building an equitable society.
