Stone Town is a colourful African town full of hustle and bustle. The only problem is that it doesn’t always stop hustling and bustling when you decide to go to bed. In fact people invariably bustle just outside your bedroom window till late in the night. And when they stop, a screeching owl or gobbling turkey gleefully takes up the refrain. Occasionally ‘bustle’ turns to ‘hustle’, and that's when you'll be grateful to be curled up listening to the sound of the ocean on your own private island across the bay.

Chapwani Private Island, a tiny strip of woodland and sandbanks lying a mile offshore, has a cluster of traditional bungalows and a villa lining the beach. Spend your day sightseeing in town, or shopping for fabrics, wooden crafts and spices; then jump on the shuttle boat and, 15 minutes later, you can be enjoying a sunset cocktail on your beach lounger while the kids splash in the shallows. If you’ve only got a few days on Zanzibar, it’s a great way of fitting in Stone Town and a beach holiday.

Mafia Island and its surrounding archipelago including Jibondo, Juani and Chole is located 30 minutes flight south of Zanzibar. Mafia has a great deal to offer as an unspoiled, little-visited alternative to other Indian Ocean locations around Zanzibar and along the coast. However, as with Pemba, Mafia has better diving than Zanzibar, but worse beaches. Mafia is the one island off Tanzania's coast that really encourages visitors to explore its offshore islands and sand bars. There are very few hotels here which only adds to the attraction of Mafia as the beach destination for the adventurous traveller.

The central main island of Mafia is where most accommodation options are located, the smaller islands are fun to explore, with crumbling historical ruins now inhabited by a variety of different animals, from monkeys to wild pigs, fruit bats and bush babies.

Mafia is primarily known for its ocean glory; the Marine Park which was created to protect its reefs. Do note that the beaches on the main island are not nearly as good as those onZanzibar, but the diving, fishing and snorkelling are infinitely better. Whereas Zanzibar has no diving for advanced divers, Mafia has challenging and rewarding dives for the advanced - as well as numerous sheltered bays and coves that are great for novice to intermediate divers. Snorkelling is also magnificent.

The atmosphere of all the islands is that of adventure; days are spent fishing or exploring exposed sand bars and untouched reefs. The diving on offer here is certainly the best in the entire region. Perhaps a lodge only for those mad keen on making diving the central focus of their Tanzania holiday

raditions & Culture; Getting to Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo town is found 70 kilometers north of Dar es salaam City. It is one and a half hour drive from Dar es Salaam International Airport or the Dar es Salaam City center to reach Bagamoyo. The Kaole Ruins are located 5 kilometers south of Bagamoyo town. The ruins are considered to be the first arab settlements left by Arabs and Shirazi Settlers. This is a place where the first immigrants from the Persian gulf and others from the Somali land met with the indigenous people of the coast who were Swahilis who existed and occupied the Tanzanian coast between 6th – 7th century. (Chami. Felix, 2002 the archaeological research of the Kaole ruins).

Kaole started to rise from the 12th century up to the mid 14th century. By the beginning of 15th century’ Kaole town was abandoned, the reason behind was due to the fall of Kilwa town which were invaded by the Portuguese militants. Kaole had connections with Kilwa in terms of trade, the two ports received and dispatched important goods such as ivory, gold, animal skins oil, clothes and ceramics ware items mainly form China. The influences of Kilwa also affected the Kaole, hence forced arab settlers to quit and search for new settlements in nowadays the Bagamoyo town, but others were forced to back to Arabia and Zanzibar Island.

Bwagamoyo was the original name used to mean that ‘lay down your heart’ a name which was derived from the slaves who arrived from the interior of Tanganyika and Democratic Republic of Congo on transit to Zanzibar Island then to Reunion Islands, Seychelles, Maldives, Mauritius, Arabia and few to western parts of India. Zanzibar was a place where there was a big slave trade market. The name Bwagamoyo later on became Bagamoyo due to a letter ‘w’ to be non-pronounced especially by foreigners. Bagamoyo town offer tours in historical sites, heritage and cultural sites, museums, marine and boat safaris. About 63 kilometers north of Bagamoyo town lay a magnificent Saadani National Park where the bush meets the beach. A park offer game drive, boat safaris, turtle breeding nests, historical tours and zaraninge forest tours.

Do you wanna eat with us…?? The Blue Heron Restaurant Arusha one of the coolest Restaurant

Our pick of the garden restaurants that are a recurring theme out in Arusha’s east, the Blue Heron gets the tricky combination of lounge bar and family restaurant just right. Sit under the leafy verandah or out on the lawn tables to enjoy a menu that ranges from paninis and soups up to beef tenderloin and creative specials like rice-and-broccoli fried balls with curry ratatouille.

There’s a children’s menu, a carefully chosen selection of South African wines and a steady stream of expats looking for a quiet place to pass an afternoon.

Welcome to Zanzibar Hotel

A haven of peace and tranquillity nestled in the heart of bustling Stone Town. This impressive landmark, dating back to the 1800s, and boasting a private garden of lush tropical vegetation, was the first hotel on the island.

A rich 19th century air of elegance greets you as you walk through the original Zanzibari door. Beautiful beamed ceilings, marble floors, Persian carpets and magnificent crystal chandeliers recreate the glamour of former times.

The atmosphere is warm and relaxed and the ambiance embraces the uniqueness of the local culture. As you ascend the original wooden staircase to your suite, the sounds from the courtyard water cascades echo serenely throughout the building.
