Iringa Walking Tour

Went on an exploration safari to look for some alternative tourism activities such as camping & hiking. This is on the edge of the udzungwa scarp forest. You can see the effects of human settlement. Beautiful valley though!

The boundary of the Udzungwa Scarp forest reserve...such a dramatic difference. The have been called the Galapagos of Africa due to the bio-diversity including birds, primates, frogs etc. a great alternative or add-on to the traditional African safari package.

On my safari yesterday, I had to choose between a steep sandy slope or returning to the village. Glad I made a great choice as my short visit was enjoyable and we shared some sweet sugarcane. Kids were very curious and surprised by my Swahili greetings. There are 19 villages around the nature reserve & adventure tourism or research could be a source of income for them.

Everyone had a great hike up to the rock paintings at Igeleke and our guests from the US enjoyed learning about the cultural practices that took place here

Kariakoo in Dar es Salaam gets its name from the 'Carrier Corps" whose depot was located there.
During WW1 many people were forced to be porters for both the German & British armies, leaving the villages deserted with only children & old people.
On the 150 mile march from Iringa to Dodoma, the British column required 9,300 lbs of food a day as they marched. As a result they needed over 10,500 porters, who each carried 50 lbs of supplies.
The suffering and causalities from this period will never be fully known as the conscripted porters were exposed to diseases such as influenza, small pox and syphilis as well as being overworked in tough conditions
