AkiSema Media is a consulting, training and production firm specialising in the development of the broadcasting industry in Africa. RADIO COURSES
A. Basic Introduction into Radio
This course is mainly for on-air voices who are new to Radio or who come into radio without any formal introduction into the basics.
Topics:
• The Radio Station: Studio; equipment; basic rules and behavior; handling equipment; understanding station policy and format; General ethics; broadcast laws and regulatory bodies.
• Communication: The process; successful communication.
• Radio Announcing: Presentation and News Reading; the art of talking on radio; the person-to-person process; using the voice; the microphone; Worming up and reducing tension in the voice.
• Handling live commentaries: Sports, events, politics, business, entertainment and public shows.
• Radio Interview: Live on air; types of interviews and formats; setting questions.
• Talk-back Radio: The art of talk-back; handling profanities in talk-back.
• Music, Entertainment and Drama: The Music Show; Preparation; Content; Discipline; music request shows; the Radio Dee Jay.
• Promotions: Promoting and trailing programmes; creating high-listener interest; programmes and commercial appeal.

B. Programme Planning, Electronic News Gathering (ENG) and Production
Technicalities.
The course is for field reporters, producers, editors and production executives responsible for handling features, documentaries and supplements.

• Methods of planning and preparing for the documentary/feature: Selection of topics; identifying issues and sources; research; setting interviews; and conducting interviews.
• ENG schedule: Working on location and gathering materials for the radio programme; reporting in rural and semi rural settings; city and urban coverage; understanding the importance of ambiance; and actualities.

C. Radio News and Current Affairs- the Broadcast Journalist.
The course is designed for personnel who want to join the reportorial crew, radio reporters, editors and research/field staff:

• Perspective of radio news: Basics of writing news; structure; house style; clarity and keeping news copy simple; timing and choice language.
• Rules, ethics, code, balance and handling controversies.
• Interviewing for radio news: Formats; types; flow and sequence; handling interviewees.
• Voicing and packaging reports: Pace; clarity; phrasing; voice grabs; actualities and ambiance; and deadlines.
D. Reporting Development Issues

E. Basic Audience Research & Analysis

F. PCs and Audio Work Stations
This is a more practical application for field reporters, editors, and producers programme makers.

• Introduction digital and an overview on digital imperatives in broadcasting.
• Introduction to digital audio hardware and processing applications
• The old versus the new- analogue and the challenge of the digital culture – “Managing the switch”
• Overview of popular software applications.
• Introduction to digital production: Recording audio and multi track applications; digitizing using single and multi tracks for editing; cleaning and mixing inserts; effects and music.
• Channeling audio though portable and stationary equipment and computers.
TRAINING METHODOLOGY AND SCHEDULES
AkiSema offers practical/hands-on and participatory training. Every participant must get involved because the training is intended to stimulate potential. The syllabus encourages group exercises and self evaluation by the participants. Following a modular design, participants are required to attend all sessions, since each session has bearing to the entire training package although each module is considered to be a stand alone. Hand outs, audio training materials and templates are provided as reference materials for the participants to use in their day to day work after the training.
Training durations will vary from course to course depending on the needs of our clients but lies between 5-10 days. Training sessions will basically run from 08.30am to 06.00pm with breaks at 10.00am to 10.30am (Morning break), 01.00pm to 02.00pm (Lunch break), and 04.00pm to 04.30 pm (Afternoon break).
