This week: The Eastern Africa Training Workshop on Severe Weather and Impact-based Forecasting and Warning Services in Entebbe. The training workshop is being conducted with the aim of improving the provision of weather and climate services in the Eastern Africa countries. The workshop is facilitated by World Meteorological Organization . Ugandan representatives include the Ministry of Water and Environment , stakeholders in disaster preparedness, early warning and media.

Countries and major organisations represented include Rwanda, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, Finland, UK Met, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan and Burundi. The other is World Met organisation.

March to May 2025 Seasonal Forecast: Below-normal rainfall expected over most parts of the Greater Horn of Africa: The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre ICPAC today, 21st January 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia officially released the March to May (MAM) 2025 seasonal climate forecast. This season is critical for the equatorial part of the Greater Horn of Africa region and contributes up to 60% of the annual rainfall in many parts. The MAM forecast indicates a higher likelihood of below normal rainfall conditions over the eastern and western parts of the region.
Ministry of Water and Environment, with the Department Meteorological services will downscale the national forecast during the National Climate Outlook Forum(NCOF) next week.

Department of Meteorology (DoM) is participating in the UNFCCC COP29 in Baku, Azabaijan. The Dept is represented by the Commissioner, Dr. Bob Alex Ogwang and the Assistant Commissioner, Applied Data, Meteorology and Climate Services, Mr. Deus Bamanya. The COP29’s expected outcomes will help DoM enhance its data collection, forecasting, and early warning systems, strengthen capacity through technical support, and increase access to climate finance for climate resilience and adaptation efforts. This will improve Uganda’s ability to respond to the impacts of climate change, benefiting the country’s development and climate resilience.

UNMA today release the June, July, August seasonal forecast. Overall, the JJA 2024 rainfall forecast indicates that northern Uganda is expected to receive near-normal(near average)to above-normal(more than average)rainfall.However, most parts of Central&Southwestern Uganda are likely to experience dry conditions during the forecast period. Tropical cyclone Hidaya makes landfall in Tanzania. This is first video received but detailed ones coming soon. We pray losses are curtailed.

Kenya Meteorological Department however says that current observations indicate that Tropical though Cyclone Hidaya has made landfall on the coast of Tanzania However, another depression is developing behind it, which the Kenya Meteorological Department is closely monitoring. Heavy Rains Alert:
The first dekadal of May 2024 depicts a continuation of wet conditions over most parts of the country with heavy to very heavy rainfall events expected over Southwestern -in some of the areas in Kigezi and Greater Bushenyi districts while in North Eastern in the districts of Karamoja sub region and neighbouring Acholi sub region. Other areas to receive enhanced rainfall are in Midwestern sub region in the districts of Masindi, Kiryandongo, Kagadi, and Kabarole and the Elgon highlands.

Potential hazards expected include flash floods, landslides, waterlogging,contamination of water sources,destruction of roads,washing away/ collapsing of bridges.
